Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Roberts.
Hi Abby, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My story began in 2002 during my last year as a student at Marietta College. My journey through college was bumpy to say the least and took me 5 years to complete. At that point, I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but needed 3 credits to finish and earn my degree. I didn’t want to read any more books and noticed that pottery was on the schedule. I enrolled, fell in love with it, and spent many hours in the studio, but then soon graduated and started my career as a social worker. Life just kept rolling…I got married, had children, and began working as a teacher. Almost 18 years had passed and though I did find fulfillment in some ways in those positions, my heart was somewhere else. In September 2019 after the birth of our 4th son, I decided to take the risk and begin making pottery in my basement rather than returning to work. We literally used all of our small savings to invest in the equipment, tools, and supplies to get started. I’m mainly self-taught aside from the one class I took all those years ago. My growth has been the result of many many failures, but I’ve learned so much over the past three years…about myself, about small business, about following your heart, and believing in your gift. There is so much more for me to learn, but truthfully, I don’t think we’re ever done learning…I don’t plan to be, anyway. Isaiah 64:8
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a primarily self-taught potter has presented many challenges. There has been a lot of trial and error when trying new methods or design techniques. I also had no idea how to run a business, so that has been a huge learning experience, too.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I primarily make functional pottery that can be used every day. The most demanded item is the coffee mug! I’m most proud of my progress in making them over the years. I have a few of my very first mugs and to see the ones I’m making now is kind of like ‘wow’… these are so much better!!! In the beginning, I was just doing the basics…making a cylinder and then attaching a handle. Now that I’m familiar with and comfortable with that, I’ve been able to explore more creative processes and glazing techniques, which has been incredibly fun.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
It’s so very important to find something to pursue career-wise that you find fulfilling and provides you with room to grow. It’s okay to not know what you want to do! It’s okay to be scared and even have self-doubt, but don’t let it be an excuse to not make a move.
