Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Marie.
Hi Brittany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Attending the School for Creative and Performing arts introduced me to the stage at 8 years old. I’ve been in love with performing ever since. After taking a hiatus in my adult years, I made my return performing backgrounds for various local artists until I became the lead singer of Sound the Alarm Music Group in 2018. My first show was at the Butcher and Barrel with 3 people watching! That didn’t stop us at all. I spent time perfecting my craft just in time for Covid to happen and the world to close. With nothing to do, I started writing. I needed music to release my feelings and tell my stories. I recorded the songs, but I didn’t feel brave enough to release them. Being a cover singer, I felt like people only saw me in one light. After a year, I started releasing my original music realizing it was my duty to show people who I was. My stories existed to prove that you can be all sides of yourself because in this new world we’re in, people are dying for authenticity. I am proud to say this week, I released my 4th single and have featured on a multitude of records for other artists.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! When I started performing, my relationship ended because my partner didn’t support my goals. I lost multiple friends along the journey when I started becoming more successful than they were. My old friends weren’t evolving and growing with me, so I had to let them go. Then there was a suicide in my family. That shook me to my core. There was this period of sheer isolation where life felt so heavy, I just didn’t move for almost a week. Getting back to life seemed impossible. The thought of leaving my house brought intense panic attacks, and still, I had to perform. I had to stand in front of crowds and sing their problems away while standing in mine. As soon as I began to heal from that, I lost my job. Then, Covid hit, so everything went on lockdown. I had no money, no job, and now no gigs either. This time, the isolation produced my first set of original songs so I’m super thankful for it. All of these struggles forced me to really take a deep look into myself and figure out who I wanted to be.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an R&B singer here in Cincy. I specialize in live performance and am known as the lead singer of Sound the Alarm, a very well-known cover band here. It’s hard to choose one thing I am most proud of. I would have to say my 3 most proud accomplishments are establishing a residency as the house band of Nostalgia Wine & Jazz (2 years running currently), headlining our first theater performance with Dance Revolution Theater at the Aronoff Center, and releasing my first 4 singles within the last year. What sets me apart from others is not only my vocal capacity but my ability to change the energy of a room with my voice. When I perform, I take you on a journey of whatever it is that I’m feeling during that song.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
When I was in 8th grade, one of my teachers introduced me to jazz music. He gave me a Nancy Wilson and Canonball Adderly CD. I took it to my nana’s house, and we played it together while she made dinner. There was this song called “Save your love for me.” It was slow and warm. But the way my nana sang it? It felt like the longest hug from your favorite person; like rocking in a hammock under the sun. It made me appreciate how dynamics in music can create a feeling inside of you. That song has had me in an embrace ever since. I still sing it when I miss her to this day.
