Rising Stars: Meet Michael Marino

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Marino.

Hi Michael, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After the passing of my mother at the age of 18, I felt lost. I felt like I needed to make something of myself for her, to make her proud. Me and my friends flew the LA for a music video; they needed someone to film and take pictures. The moment that camera took the first photo, I was hooked. I didn’t think anything of it, that it was good or not. But when one of the photographers down there started to hype me up. I’ve never had someone that hype about something I’ve done. I knew from that moment on this was my calling. The capturing a moment in the endless moving of time. To be able to look back on something. And to be able to put my own twist of my emotions and feeling in a picture. Today I’m working on getting better at what I’m doing a fine-tuning my craft.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road I’m on is not easy. I struggle every day with thoughts of “am I doing the right thing” “will this work” but deep down in my heart, I know this is what I want to do. And I know all the struggles will be worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I take photographs and videos of rappers and producers. I’m known for cheap quality photography. I’m most proud of a music video I shot and edited (not released yet), and I think what sets me apart from others is my carefree nature. Yes, this is my work; yes, it is my creations. But I want stress-free environments for my clients, pressure-free.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is not struggling every day. To wake up and not worry about bills being paid, food put on the table, or anything like that. Success is being able to do what you love and make the money you want doing it.
