Rising Stars: Meet Adam Newman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Newman.

Hi Adam, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Ever since I can remember, I knew that I wanted to be involved in music. It was my obsession even at the age of 3. At the age of 8, I started playing piano and trained classically for 14 years. When I was 17, I started a band with friends from home (eastern Kentucky). A few years later, we moved to Columbus, Ohio where we played until breaking up in 2006. Since then, I’ve been on my own. Back in 2014, I was working at Blackbird Studio in Nashville and started recording some songs with friends. That ended up turning into the “Get Out The Dark” EP that was released in 2015. Through a stroke of luck, I was able to go to NYC and have Kevin Killen (Kate Bush, U2, Bowie) mix the EP as well as have Gerry Leonard (Bowie, Rufus Wainwright) play guitar on the album. It ended up getting some National AirPlay but I didn’t push as much as I could at the time. I was intending to record something new in 2020, but the pandemic put that on hold. Finally, this past January, I started recording the “Sissy” EP with Keith Hanlon of Secret Studio here in Columbus, Ohio, working on it on my days off. We finally got it finished in May and then it was mastered and released on July 15th.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I think any artist would agree. I’ve had moments where the momentum has been there, and I’ve felt as if success was within reach, but then the bottom drops out. I’m trying to take all that I’ve learned from those moments and channel it into this new album.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I’m most proud of is being in a place in my life now where I’m writing and recording from a very authentic place. There were times that (even though I didn’t want to admit it) I found myself so hungry for success that I started sacrificing my true self to chase it and put out what I thought would gain me some traction. I did that with “Get Out The Dark.” Although there are parts of that EP I really love, I can hear the desperation in it. That’s absolutely not something I’ll ever do again. From now on, I’m only doing what I want without thinking about how it’ll be received.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
Luck has definitely played a role. I’ve been lucky to have a very supportive family and group of friends. I’ve also been very lucky to cross paths with people in the industry who have taught me so much from working with them.
