Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Loomis.
Hi Kimberly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I graduated 20 years ago from a local Ohio JVS and began my career working for a few corporate salons around the central Ohio area. 11 years ago, I opened my own salon beginning my path as an independent business owner called Urban Posh Salon. Since then, I have been able to personally travel the world as a brand educator, worked backstage at multiple fashion shows and photo shoots, became an in-print stylist, and have continuously expanded my brand as a worldwide top 100 colorist for the Talent Greenhouse competition while building an incredible salon environment for my clients to enjoy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Throughout the past 20 years, as trends and technology have changed, I have had to reinvent myself to adapt to that change. For example, in September 2021 I relaunched Urban Posh Salon to incorporate the privilege of becoming a partner with Green Circle Salon by becoming a 100% sustainable and carbon neutral location. Another change was when I initially launched Urban Posh Salon it was important to me to be a safe space for all people. This included gender-neutral pricing, respecting individual’s preferred pronouns, offering silent appoints, and creating a judgment-free zone.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Urban Posh Salon is located in the Polaris Area of North Columbus. I am known as a color specialist as well as creating custom cuts and styles for each of my clients’ unique choices. I specialize in everything from fashion shades, color corrections, precision haircuts, and high-textured styles. At Urban Posh Salon we are a vegan, cruelty-free salon that is 100% sustainable with a carbon neutral footprint using only exclusive, top-of-the-line professional products. I also offer my clients a unique service option of silent service appointments. With this option, my clients can enjoy a relaxing environment without the need for extra chit-chat or small talk, all while receiving the same exceptional service I provide. Urban Posh Salon has and will always be a safe space where services are based on length not gender. Partnering with the Dress Code Project, I strive to create a SAFER SPACE by providing gender-affirming haircuts that help my clients look the way they feel.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
At an early age, I remember always being creative. I can remember coloring my Barbie’s hair with my mom’s eyeshadows and always gravitating toward anything art based. I realized in school that my favorite classes were art class, art history, and mathematics, which led me to the decision of attending a vocational program where I could express my artistic abilities. I quickly adopted an independent mentality after graduation, becoming one of the youngest managers of the salons I work at early on. At 19 I managed my store well beyond the expectations set by corporate, was living independently for a few years, and constantly looking for ways to improve myself through education and advancement.
