Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Rufener.
Hi Katie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was in college, I taught myself hand lettering and would mainly practice while taking notes during lectures. I had a dream to start a business someday but I wasn’t exactly what type of business it would be. One day it all clicked and I decided I wanted to create a product line that featured my hand-lettered designs. Seville Lettering Company was born in November of 2018 with a collection of wax seal stamps and greeting cards designed with sentiments I hand-lettered or illustrated. In 2020, we rebranded Seville Lettering Company to Modern Legacy Paper Company. In November of 2021, we opened our first brick & mortar location in Downtown Seville, OH.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not! There have been so many times that I’ve wanted to give up and I’ve made countless mistakes. With anything though, I’ve learned so much and it’s made me a better small business owner.

Modern Legacy Paper Company is a stationery and paper goods boutique. Our flagship product is our wax seal stamp kits, which are everything you need to create a wax seal. All of our wax seal stamp designs are hand-lettered or illustrated by our founder, Katie.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’m happiest when I’m with my husband and my daughter, exploring a new place, or spending time outside. I’m most inspired by travel, nature, and watching my daughter experience things for the first time.
