Life & Work with Jenna Horner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Horner.

Jenna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’d love to! I have always loved styling and taking photos. When I was young, I would go through disposable cameras like they were candy. My friends and I would set up elaborate scenes and wear the most fashionable (we thought) of outfits. Having my mom drive me to the local drug store to get my film developed was an adventure in itself. And when CDs came out? A whole new world of creativity was unleashed before me in the digital universe! I dove head first into photoshop and editing programs at only 11 years old. I was hooked.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I think choosing to be an entrepreneur is possibly the roughest road you can take! I have been in business for a little over a decade and I would be lying if I said I was 100% confident in choosing this as my career along the way. I started my business right after I became a new mom, and at only 20 years old! Since then, I have gone through a divorce, been remarried, gained a stepdaughter, had two more beautiful boys, bought a house, adopted three dogs and a cat, and became the sole provider. It’s A LOT of work, but I love what I do.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Honestly, I do a little bit of everything. Actually, maybe too much of everything. My official job title is Photographer and that is what am known for. But I also do web and graphic design, copywriting, branding, marketing, networking, accounting, and customer service. I like to be in control of what I am delivering!

I have struggled with confidence over the years. The question of “is it enough” has been on my mind more than I’d like to admit. But in the recent years I have been able to recognize my strengths more than ever. Hello, 30’s! With that said, I think I am most proud of my ability to connect with people. When I was young, I was very introverted and my career has forced me out of that shell.

Connection is SO important when it comes to documenting. Being able to put myself in my subjects shoes allows me to photograph them in an emotional and real way.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
What a loaded question! To me, success is about where you were vs. where you are today. Success has no end, and it grows alongside you.
