Exploring Life & Business with Nathan Aston of Nathan’s Lawn-n-Landscape

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Aston.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
At the age of 15, I started working at Barbera & Sons Landscaping as a lawn maintenance crew member. Off and on I worked throughout the summers and learned the techniques and practices of properly maintaining a lawn along with working on small landscape projects. I worked hard and proved my worth to the company. Years later, I graduated high school in 2018 with no definite path ahead. The owner of the company decided he was looking to sell the business and focus on other things. Opportunity knocked and I let it in. Since purchasing his company and establishing a name for myself, I have grown my own business to something I never could have imagined. At the start of it all, it was just me and 14 mow accounts. To date, I now have a full-time mow and full-time landscape crew under my wings. We have around 50 weekly lawn maintenance accounts and plenty of landscaping jobs to go around. We specialize in full-service weekly mowing, landscape installs and renovation, fall cleanup/ leaf removal, and aerating with over-seed services.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If it was easy, everyone would do it. Being an entrepreneur has its ups and downs, highs and lows, good and bad days. A main struggle for me was genuinely learning to run, operate and manage a business of my own. I learned that the best way to learn something is to just do it. So, I just jumped in and learned along the way. I had to ask questions, get out of my comfort zone, work long days and even longer nights, sacrifice my physical and mental health, lose sleep and lose money. Some of these things still occur, but now with a little experience under my belt and more help, I have become better at managing these things. Finding a good work/life balance has always been a struggle, but I am getting better with time.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a lawn and landscape company based in Uniontown Ohio servicing the Stark County area. We specialize in a full-service weekly mowing service and landscaping across the board. We currently maintain 50+ residential and commercial lawns a week. Our customers new and old have come to expect a worry-free service and a perfectly maintained lawn week after week. Our landscape sector of the business stays busy this time of year. From mulch refreshers and installs to aggregate flower beds, planting, removals, and general clean-ups, Nathan`s Lawn-n-Landscape provides service that is unmatched. In the spring and fall especially- we offer a full-service leaf clean-up and removal service. During the same times of the year, we also provide an aeration and over-seed service to better improve the health and appearance of our customers’ lawn. We provide all services with the utmost care and attention to detail. We don`t leave until the customer is 100% satisfied.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I would say I was a shy kid growing up. Going to multiple schools was difficult but I always seemed to fall into the right group of friends. I was always interested in being outside. Skateboarding played a big part in my childhood. Wintertime brought snowboarding. School was never my cup of tea. I was a huge procrastinator when it came to school work (still am) but still managed to keep my grades up enough to keep myself, my teachers, and dad happy. Looking back, I could have never imagined having the responsibility I have now. I can remember my first dream job I wanted to have was to be a Vet. I loved and have always loved and cared for all animals. That dream quickly died when I realized I would have to pursue many years of school to achieve this. I believe I could have achieved this but being a Vet just did not sound as appealing to me as I got older.
