Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawanna Jones.
Hi Dawanna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sunrise breakfast began during the winter of 2019. At a typical family gathering destiny (co-owner) came up with the idea of a breakfast truck since Dayton is missing one. After months of working together and collaborating with other local businesses. On the 8th of May in 2021 we were able to run sunrise breakfast food truck. After a few setbacks with locations, we found our current location at the United house of god. It’s been a blessing to be able to serve our community. More importantly, supporting other local businesses bringing the community together through food.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the struggles we endured was LOCATION!!! In certain territories of the city, you have to have additional permits to run along with the parking permits and paying lot rent. We quickly found out that there are some townships within Dayton that do not allow mobile food trucks to be ran. More specifically Harrison township. Another struggle would be securing electricity during weather storms.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a full-time student at the University Of Cincinatti and I also work full-time at a deli in Cincinnati. Currently, at the University I’m studying criminal justice and I plan to obtain a law degree with the university. I am most proud of the work that I accomplished with public allies through the city of Cincinnati city manager’s office. I was able to apply and be awarded a grant for $2000. With that grant, I was able to have a traffic calming mural placed in the city of Cincinnati. What’s that’s me apart most from my peers is my determination and drive to become more than my environment has awarded me. Outside of those aspects family is my number one priority which is why I cut on the business with my siblings and through all the challenges we have been able to prosper and keep pushing for success.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I would say an Americorp public allies really helped me become grounded and motivated me to create something with them in my community to make a change. Another big role model I would have to say was some of my local community members I can’t recall their names now but I do appreciate the local city members having events at island park and bringing the community together
