Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Mosoriak.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been singing and performing since I was a little girl. One of the very first songs I have memory of singing was “Redneck Woman” by Gretchen Wilson!!! My mom noticed my talent and how much I loved to sing and so I started taking private voice lessons when I was 11 years old. As I aged into middle and high school, I sang in choir and did a lot of musical theatre. It’s truly where I began to find myself and where I belonged.
I eventually found myself in the opera and classical world toward the end of my high school career. My voice teacher encouraged me to apply to collegiate vocal performance Bachelor of Music programs and I landed at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. I spent 4 wonderful years there and then in 2019, moved on to get my Master of Music degree at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. Once the pandemic began in 2020, so did my teaching! I created my own online voice studio teaching students all across the country from Wisconsin to Indiana, to Arizona! Although this was a super new endeavor for me, my passion for teaching was immediate and I have absolutely loved making personal connections with my students and cheering on their vocal (and life) successes. Helping them heal their relationship with their voice, sing more freely, and introducing them to new genres has been the highlight of my last two years of teaching.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Not totally! Learning how to adjust my communication style for each student was definitely something I had to work on. Everyone takes in information differently, so having multiple ways of explaining one concept was something that I was (and still am) finding the balance of. Each voice lesson has such a personalized design for each student—so developing vocal exercises, repertoire suggestions, and specific vocal techniques, tips, and guidance also took a lot of careful and thoughtful planning along the way.
My goal is that how and what I am teaching is the best and most efficient way for my students to grow and reach their personal vocal goals and of course, this changes almost week to week, so I have to keep up! 🙂
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I teach voice lessons to people wanting to explore their relationship with their voice. My specialty areas are classical, opera, and musical theatre; however, I follow my students’ interests where they lead so no genre is off-limits to me!
I am extremely proud of the environment in my studio and my teaching values. So many singers have had toxic, traumatic, negative experiences in voice lessons and I am adamant about creating an environment that is light, fun, and safe to explore in. Lessons with me are joyful. I laugh, make jokes, and encourage my students to be imperfect. To me, there are no rules with singing. The only rule is to follow freedom. I do this by encouraging my students to listen to their body cues and sensations rather than what sounds they are hearing come out of their mouth when they sing. We start with the body because the body has to be free in order for the voice to be free.
Something that sets me apart from others is that I don’t believe there is a “wrong” way to sing. I only believe there is a comfortable way. Yes, I am trained in vocal pedagogy and I do use that as the basis for all of my teaching, but only insofar as a guiding tool for comfort, not a hard and fast immovable rule. My students know what feels best for them, so I follow where they guide me. I am the vocal expert, but they are the experts of themselves and their bodies. My primary goal is to give my students tools to become self-sufficient as their own teachers, to trust what they feel, and to arrive at a comfortable place of singing that allows for vocal success in whatever that looks like to them.
What do you think about happiness?
Cheese and cafe lights. Because cheese is the best food on Earth and cafe lights give me butterflies and hope.
