Daily Inspiration: Meet Lindsay Cason

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Cason.

Hi Lindsay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As you can imagine, life as it we knew it was turned upside down when COVID-19 was discovered in early 2020. I was no exception. All the sudden, everything that I knew had changed and after quarantine started for our nation and the world, I needed a creative outlet to fill the time that I once spent going out to dinner with family and traveling with friends. Quarantine had actually been a blessing in disguise and what I originally thought to be a burden became something I never knew I needed- time to slow down and reflect. I had always wanted to start my own business, although I had no idea what that business would be. I wanted it to be something unique and handmade; something that I could say was my own creation. It was in those first moments of quarantine, that a good friend of my mine started making candles and she suggested to me that I try it out. Little did I know, it would consume all of the time I had when I wasn’t working. I spent months researching, learning, and practicing my craft. I joined multiple candle-making groups on Facebook and I watched an enormous amount of YouTube videos so that I could understand the science behind candle-making. The whole process tested my patience and confidence in myself and there were many times I felt like giving up, but I had amazing support from my family and friends who helped me test my candles until I finally got the recipe right! Now, a little over 2 years later, I have a business that many people in my community look forward to supporting and I can’t begin to express the gratitude I have for them. I frequently attend local craft shows in northern Kentucky and Cincinnati and I’ve actually had people tell me they attend craft events just to purchase my candles! It’s an amazing compliment to me and I cannot thank them enough for the constant support. I currently have a Facebook group called Unbridled Spirit Candles by Lindsay and an Instagram page @unbridled_spirit_candles that you can join/follow. I am working on a website and it’s under construction at the moment, but it’s www.uscandlesky.com. I hope to have it up and running before the end of 2022, so keep a lookout for it!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey with candle-making has been anything, but smooth! I had many challenges over the last two years, including learning the candle-making craft, months of struggling with testing, cancelled craft shows due to COVID-19, and many candle product shortages from suppliers. Luckily, I have been able to master my craft, craft shows are no longer being cancelled and suppliers have finally been able to restock their supplies consistently. Life is getting back to a “new normal” and I couldn’t be happier!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an HR Professional by trade, specifically in Employee Relations. I graduated from Northern Kentucky University (NKU) in 2015 with a Bachelor’s degree in HR management and then returned to NKU the following year to then receive a Master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology. Out of all the things I’ve accomplished, I’m most proud of my master’s degree. It was the most difficult experience of my life and it challenged in ways I never thought possible and I am better for it. I think my resilience in the face of both professional and personal difficulties sets me apart from others. Being challenged and pushed to my limits empowers me to keep moving forward and to not give up until I reach my goal. It may fail over and over again, but I come back with more determination and motivation than before.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I have an endless amount of favorite childhood memories, but one of my favorites was having my maternal grandmother pick my sister and I up from elementary school and immediately going to KFC on our way home. I always looked forward to my grandmother picking me up for that reason. It was such a special time in my life and my grandmother was one special lady.
