Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Cherry.
Troy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It’s been a long road to get to where I am today. I started as a graphic designer as far back as 2008, those skills along with my own personal rap career got me interested in making merch for my recording label. So, I started making t-shirt ideas and learned about screen printing. I then worked for a screen-printing company 2013 and that piqued my interest into the ins and outs of fashion. I decided then that I would learn more about cut & sew production, I purchased a sewing machine and taught myself how to make garments from scratch.
All of that led to where I am today, producing custom clothing items for private clients as well as creating my own retail brand OVRSTND USA.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There has been many struggles along the way. I am a father of 4 who is trying to chase a dream, so finances were low at times, support from friends and family wasn’t present, and I really felt like giving up more times than once. Sometimes I still feel that way but the feedback from the fashion industry insiders and my customers keep me going. This journey is definitely not for the weak.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create cut & sew projects from scratch, as well as design fast fashion for retail sales. I specialize in making products outside of the box. I feel I have the ability to take a product that many people can make and do the impossible with it. I’m most proud of my ability to take a creative idea and bring it to life for someone to purchase. I most recently directed my first movie titled ZERO DEGREES which I’m very proud of. It gave me a chance to showcase my clothing on a big stage as well as my musical, writing, and leadership abilities.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Most important lesson I’ve learned is to have patience and never give up on yourself. We only get one life and I feel you should spend at least some of that time believing in yourself at a high level.
