Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh & Becky Wentworth-Kuhn.
Hi Josh & Becky, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Bix and I moved to Mount Vernon not only to reconnect with nature and explore plant healing but to have the space to expand ourselves creatively and artistically. We worked for a number of years from our home in the country. I with my clinical herbalism studies and found object sculpture, and she with leather and glass, textiles, and illustration. While doing small shows and farmers’ markets, we knew we needed a shop of our own. A place of healing, empathy, and inclusivity that would also serve as a creative outlet and a space for those seeking wonder. We found a long-abandoned hidden place that spoke of the world before, and with time and effort transformed it into the somewhat retro-futuristic turn of the century apothecary that we call home. In these past three years, we have embraced and been embraced by our community. We have helped our neighbors heal and find whimsy in their lives, and have made so many great friends along the way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Sometimes it’s difficult being a hidden shop in an out-of-the-way town, but we are so thankful to have regular friends who pop in every week to see what’s new, and every day we meet new people who undoubtedly will come back again.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I (Josh) began my studies with Appilacian folk medicine which led to a study in Eclectic tissue states, which further led to a broader Planetary approach that combines Traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, and Western herbalism. Bix provides handmade herbal goods (soap, lotions, etc.) and creates beautiful works in leather that range from high-end sculptural to hand-tooled journals.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
We have worked very hard to create a place of empathy and compassion where all are welcome, however, we would not have survived without the continual support of our community. As outsiders in a small town, we were apprehensive about being accepted. With all the love and support it can muster, this little town has happily proven us so wrong in so many ways, and for that, we will be forever grateful.
