Check Out Mercedes Brown’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mercedes Brown. 

Hi Mercedes, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In November of 2020 I had a mild heart attack, & it honestly severely changed me not just physically but mentally. I had been living with tachycardia since 2018 & it’s been so challenging. I wanted to change some things in my life, become more in control of my future since it felt like I lost complete control of myself & body. I’ve always done makeup on myself but never on anybody else so I took 2 Classes to better enhance my skills. I started taking clients officially in February of 2021, it was so difficult but I kept going. Slowly but surely my clientele started building up, the number 1 thing that I focused on was my customer service. I am not perfect but even if a client wasn’t fully satisfied with their service at least they could tell you how nice & sweet I was so that later on down the line once I’ve improved my skills they would come back for sure. I’m always looking to improve to learn new techniques & methods! In October of 2021, that’s when I started doing body painting & SFX makeup it really helps me escape from everything because I’ll really sit and concentrate on one look for hours at a time which has taught me great discipline as a result of doing so. Today I am still looking to improve more & more every day as an artist & businesswoman, I just want to be the best that I could possibly be & I am very determined to keep pushing myself until I’ve reached my full potential. 

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some struggles I face are my mental & physical health. Often, it’s not talked about how people in the beauty industry deal with things such as anxiety & depression it can be quite difficult at times to balance taking care of my mental health by making time for myself but also running a business at the same time. I can’t just delete all my social media to take a break from reality because social media is how I make my money. 

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Cleveland, Ohio Makeup Artist & I do natural makeup & Glam/Creative Makeup. I specialize in Creative Makeup & Body Paint which is also what I’m most known for. I am most proud of my body paint looks I have done spiderman, Avatar, Cat woman & shego from Kim possible I think that’s what sets me apart from others 

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
When starting out never give up never lose that spark in you that made you start in the first place the first couple years count the most you really have to push content, throw deals to get your name out there. Having a support system is also key, having someone there for you can help a lot and relieve a lot of stress. I like to picture my future life in my head how successful I will be years from now & it really motivates me to keep going. Things I wish I knew before starting out, would be to not compare my progress to others.
