Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Duncan.
Hi Bryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Nocterra was formed on the idea of Beer + Outside, the perfect combination. The founders worked in various outdoor industries for several years, including hiking, camping, whitewater, mountain biking, climbing, and snow sports. After a day of adventure, a beer was always shared with friends to talk about their epic day and share plans for the next fun thing to do outside. The brewers of Nocterra started as home brewers for several years before they decided it was time to take it to the big leagues. With a team for different backgrounds, we were able to open the Powell Nocterra Location in February 2019. We took the ideas of our past and worked it into a taproom and production space that has a large inviting outdoor beer garden where beers can be shared with friends. Our brewery makes several styles to accommodate most flavor profiles but has a focus on hoppy and sour beers. There is always something for you to like in our line-up, we like the diversity of styles. Nocterra has grown in the last few years through COVID and has expanded can product to several grocery stores in the Columbus area. We hope to continue growth with our outdoor-focused branding and community involvement with an additional taproom and larger production facility. Beer + Outside = Nocterra
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a self-distributed brewery there are several challenges when breaking into a crowded market. You are often overshadowed by distributors and regional brands making it had to expand you brand. With a strong sales team, strong branding and good beer you can slowly carve your way into the market. It’s a bumpy road to navigate, but we are expanding at a steady pace. As everyone is aware of the challenges the last 2 years have been unprecedented. It always make me laugh when everyone is constantly saying “the supply chain is disrupted, and it’s causing issues”. Unfortunately, it’s a real thing and makes it difficult to find packaging and raw materials to make beer to be sold at an affordable price. It will hopefully start to correct itself in the next few years.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nocterra Brewing Company?
Our brewery focuses on drinkable beer styles to be shared with friends. We offer a wide variety of offerings from NEIPAs to fruited sours to light lagers and everything in-between. Currently, we have a product called Flashlight hard seltzer made with real fruit to offer a gluten-free or lo-cal option. Our largest distributed beer brands include Beta Flash – NEIPA, Trail Break – Lager, and California Swell Line – 2x Fruited Gose. We have several seasonal and one-off beers available in cans and in draft around the city.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Columbus is a great city that has a lot to offer a diverse group of people looking for different experiences. We are within an easy drive of several outdoor areas, which makes it easy to plan small outdoor adventures. There is a thirsty craft beer scene in Columbus and it is building every day with brands expanding and making great beer.
