Conversations with Alex Leigh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Leigh.

Hi Alex, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My tattooing journey has been very long and strenuous but incredibly rewarding. When I began as an apprentice, my mentor at the time didn’t take me seriously and offered me very little direction. It wasn’t until about a year into my apprenticeship where I met two artists that saw something in me and took it upon themselves to guide me. After about a year and a half, I took a break for a little bit from my apprenticeship to work on my mental health. After getting back into it with my new friends I had met, I started to really take off with my technical abilities. I spent about two years in total working as an apprentice and also working another job throughout the entire experience so it was really taxing at times. I would go months without a day off and part of me really wanted to give up. Without my support system, I wouldn’t have been able to push through it, but with their constant encouragement I prevailed and I’m so glad that I stuck with it.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Oh god no, this has not been easy by any means haha. The road has been extremely challenging mentally and physically. Sometimes you find yourself in an environment where you don’t feel respected and as an apprentice, that can happen quite often and is something you have to expect. Being a female apprentice that worked with some very fragile male egos didn’t help either. There were a lot of times I felt naturally brushed off or full-on targeted for abusive behavior.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When I was in college, I did a lot of abstract oil paintings that featured nude women. I have always felt drawn to the power of the female form in all emotional ranges. Figures and colors make a statement that words cannot, and I like to implement that into my tattooing as much as possible. Style-wise I would say I’m known for having a neotraditional style. I love the look that bold lines gives my art life. I equally love color as much as black and grey so it’s hard to pick a side with that one. It’s hard to say which tattoo I’m most proud of thus far, but I would have to say it’s the memorial dog portrait I did juxtaposed with flowers for a friend. It incorporates everything I love about tattoos. Bold lines, smooth soft shading, animals, and flowers.
