Hidden Gems: Meet Olivia Atley of BusyBÿ

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Atley.

Hi Olivia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
In 2001 I was pregnant with my oldest son Josiah, and taking weekly yoga classes as part of my graduate studies at OSU. Within a few breaths, I knew that one day I would be teaching what we now know as prenatal yoga. I aspired to obtain my training from a pretty new then, but well-known now, studio called Yoga On High. Just a few short months later I had the same revelation about becoming a doula.

After attending several prenatal appointments on my own I thought that it was important for pregnant folks to have a companion “assigned” to them if they did not have one. In my case, it was because I was a single parent. As I was looking for a pediatrician, I came across the Doula section in my medical provider directory. I did some research and knew that this was the profession for me (too).

I, unfortunately, did not have the financial means for either at the time. So, using the Columbus Metropolitan Libraries, I did a lot of research on both fields. I used the knowledge I gained about yoga to teach myself about the history and philosophy and supplemented my movement practice with videos by Rodney Yee. I did similarly with my knowledge about maternal care and support; using what I gained to support my close friends and family members.

I kept up this trend until I had the funds to start yoga training. In 2015 I began my pranayama training at Yoga On High. This lead to my Yoga Teacher Training, Sekoia Teacher Training, Reiki I Attunement, and Meditation Teacher Training. Then in 2019, I completed my first Doula Training with ROOTT. I went on to complete 2 additional trainings with Birthing Advocacy Doula Trainings and the National Black Doula Association.

These trainings paved the way for my career in each of these fields.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road to now was not traditional or simple. It took a lot of patience and focus. I would not change anything about the journey because each moment made into the woman I am today.

We’ve been impressed with BusyBÿ, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

We can create herbal products for specific needs after a consultation. Our core products are available to our doula clients for up to 1 year postpartum at 10% off.

What were you like growing up?
As a young child, I loved playing football with the boys in our neighborhood and loading my dolls into the back of my friend Jason’s toy semi-trucks that we’d later run through the mud and dirt. This lead to my love of nature. I can remember sitting in trees staring at the leaves or lying in an open field listing to the “summer bugs” (locusts) sing.

My love for music grew over the years. My parents and sisters always had music playing. I would stay up late waiting on my mom to come home from work while listening to her Anita Baker, Phylilis Hyman, and Deniece Williams albums. I grew up singing in choirs and by high school, I had learned to play 4 instruments; playing in concert and marching bands. Music was my gateway to cheerleading and dance. I began dancing at the age of 6 at the local YWCA in Elyria, Ohio and cheered for 4 years.

I was a very bubbly and outgoing child. Not much could stop me from experiencing what I desired. My sisters would say that I was loud and dramatic. But what did they expect from an aspiring performer?!?!?
