Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Madeya.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always loved to be different when it came to my style. In high school, I did a program to be a teacher! That made me quickly realize that’s not something I wanted to do. I graduated high school in 2006 and went to cosmetology school that fall. It was hard but I made it through because my dad always instilled a “finish what you started No matter how hard something is “mindset in me. After graduating from cos school, I found a salon that required 1 year of an assistant program. I liked this idea. I was able to learn from so many different stylists with more experience than me. I learned better consultation & people skills as well as getting more comfortable in my craft! A few years later when salon studios started to appear I decided to go off on my own. My dad owned his own business So I know with the help of him I could crush it. Well, I barely had clientele built up so I had to do something. I took one popular look (ombré) and ran with it. Took class after class did multiple models and started to get extremely busy and booked with that one specific color technique/look. I created multiple social media pages and took pictures of every single client I had. Social media built my book. I ended up getting overwhelmed and went back to my old salon. I was there for 10 years. I also managed it at one point! I specialized in color. I loved it. I won the best of Cleveland stylist for 2016 and was in an article of modern salon magazine. In 2019 I had my daughter and decided to go back to being an independent contractor in another studio where I currently am. Beauty box suites. I can pick my schedule, my color line, and even who my clients are! In march of 2021 my dad suddenly passed away and if it wasn’t for my friends, family, and clients I wouldn’t have been able to get through it. My clients have turned into some of the greatest friends I could ask for. They know to keep it professional but also know during the salon visit we can just have a great fun relaxing time. That’s all I want. To do what I love, have people enjoy their time, and love what I do for them! I also know I wouldn’t be who I am today or where I’m at without each and every person that I’ve ever come in contact with whether that be old bosses, coworkers and even clients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. The competition out there is tough. There’s so many amazing hairdressers that you have to sometimes step out of the box to bring in clients. The hours and days are long. I found pros and cons in both being in a salon and being an independent contractor.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a hairdresser. I specialize in color. Mainly balayage technique. I feel I’m known exactly for that! My blonding / balayage / color services.
I’m proud of the hard work I’ve put in throughout the years to be successful minus a few bumps along the way
I think what sets me apart from others is my experience in certain techniques!
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
When you’re researching a new hairdresser to go to make sure they match your style! If you’re looking for a certain cut or color, see if they have pictures of what you’re looking for. I’ve found in new clients they’ll show me pictures I’ve done before! This not only makes me happy but then I know exactly what I did on that certain client to make it an easier conversation/consultation!
