Today we’d like to introduce you to SooHee Schulz.
Hi SooHee, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is SooHee Han Schulz. I’m originally from South Korea. I moved to NY when I was 17.
I was always interested in healthcare and wellness and at first, I was going to go into a nursing program but I noticed that I can’t handle the stress of the job. Don’t get me wrong, my brother is a nurse and I highly respect this industry. He asked me if I could handle working the night shift and I realized I can’t work at night like him.
On the other hand, my father was an acupuncturist and he suggested I study and learn acupuncture and I decided to go to an acupuncture school.
I got the license after graduating, I finished school in California, so I got the California license for acupuncture and herbalism.
I worked for other acupuncture clinics, and I decided to work with my father. So we opened an acupuncture clinic in Anaheim together. My dad is retired now. And now I work with my husband and are running a small clinic together.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I was working for other clinics, I couldn’t really speak up about what I wanted and I couldn’t really push my style of treatment. I had to follow what they wanted and their protocols and company rules. After I opened my own clinic, even though at first I had to work with my father, I had more freedom and learned a lot from my dad.
Now I can pursue how I like to approach patients. I can give them the opportunity to explain their symptoms and how they feel. I don’t like rushing so I always give enough time to treat patients individually.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Unlike other acupuncture clinics, we focus on psychology. Also not only eastern medicine, we like to adapt western organic herbal medicine (such as chamomile, passionflower, yarrow, etc). My husband is a certified herbalist as well and he likes to focus on not only pain management but psychological and emotional health. He is completing an Enneagram certification and we will soon be coaching and typing our patients for development and psychological wholeness. This year, he will also be doing a mentorship program for working with and using essential oils and hydrosols for balancing mental/emotional states and individual transformation.
We ask some of our patients what their MBTI, and enneagram is so we can understand their personality as well. (MBTI and Enneagram are personality and typology systems. Enneagram’s in-depth system of personality and behavior analysis can certainly be very helpful for those looking to develop themselves and go deeper into what their unconscious motivations are.)
For the last 2 months, we’ve been making Enneagram and MBTI bracelets that have lava or wood beads that can absorb essential oils, making them perfect for stress and anxiety. They’ve become quite popular in our clinic because everyone, especially recently, has some sort of deeply rooted anxiety. They can wear the bracelet throughout the day with their favorite essential oil.
We also have eastern medicine, and organic herbal tea (that lasts around 30days) for a lot of different conditions: Some of our formulas include:
• Sleep support and insomnia
• Stress and anxiety
• Focus and concentration
• Female hormone and menstruation support
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think being you. And have enough time for your patients. People nowadays find it difficult to explain their own feelings, they appreciate how we listen and give plenty of time for them to explain their mental states, emotions, and personal histories. Before the pandemic, we used to treat a lot more patients during the day.
Now, we focus on one patient at a time, and this shows how much effort we put in for one patient and each patient deserves this.
