Life & Work with Stephanie Spencer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Spencer.

Hi Stephanie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I stumbled upon the makeup industry, I grew up a tomboy so I never really got into makeup until my senior year of college. I was doing the bare minimum at the time but then started watching a lot of YouTube videos and became enthralled with the makeup industry. I have been actively doing make up for six years, I started my journey by just practicing on friends and doing makeup for employees of the quarter at my job at the time. My first job in the beauty industry was working at Sephora and then worked at MAC. Currently, I am freelancing, mostly in bridal, I am also getting into more editorial and learning photography, and working towards solely working for myself.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey to where I am now has been the furthest from smooth. One thing about the beauty industry is you face constant rejection and that can definitely take a toll on your mental health. I’ve been told no so many times that I can’t even count anymore but the biggest thing is to remember to keep going.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Currently, the majority of my business is in bridal makeup. I love it because it’s an honor to be a part of somebody’s important day, one of the most important days in their lives. Also hanging out with the Bride squad is always a good time. Another specialty of mine is clean makeup for photoshoots.

In all honesty, I feel like I’ve mastered that pretty early in my career so I’m working on focusing more on editorial looks, the more bold/abstract editorial looks.

I am most proud of my work getting published in Selin Magazine, based in Amsterdam, October 2021. Something that sets me apart from other makeup artists is I provide a fun & luxury experience, I’m pretty much like your best friend you didn’t know you needed during appointments. I am a great make up artist but I feel like it’s not just about doing the make up but about the entire experience when you sit in my chair.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
This question always seems so easy but for me, it’s very complex, success to me would be able to create my own schedule, which would give me the flexibility to spend time with my friends and family and have a true work life balance. Also being able to create the type of work that I love as well as others. Lastly, to inspire the next group of people entering the industry after me, I didn’t always have people to help me on my journey so I definitely want to do that for others.
