Today we’d like to introduce you to Jevante King-Woods.
Hi Jevante, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first started loving art as a kid trying to draw my own cartoons and draw my favorites cartoons. Once in high school, I began to take art classes where I learned more about art history and how art can be used and translated to other things like designing clothes and costumes, marketing etc. That is when I really fell in love with art. Like a lot of artists, I didn’t have the support I thought I needed in order to succeed and hearing friends, teachers and others tell me how hard it’s going to be made me discouraged. I stop creating from 2007-2016.
During that time, I sketched here and there but nothing serious. In 2016 I had a conversation with my brother about some paintings he was working on and just felt inspired to paint. I painted every idea I had at that time and really just haven’t stopped. I sold my first painting for $100 in 2016 and that’s all I needed to know this is it for me! The journey for the past 5 years has been filled with tons of ups and downs. The pandemic helped push me to want more and to create is a more purposeful manner. I have been painting jackets and champagne bottles for past two years as well growing into marketing and fashion ideas being used by clients. All of this help mold me into the artist I am now.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been far from smooth. It was simple early on. I have been in about 40 different smaller art shows in this 5 year time period sometimes selling sometimes barely getting anyone to look my way. There is always ups and down selling artwork and I believe for me it is because of how I create is not always palatable. I also had a creative block for 6 months in 2018, I have worked 9-5 during this 5 year time period and lost my job in 2020 because of the pandemic. Since that happen things have actually been better for me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an expressionist artist. I create paintings that reflect thoughts, feelings, opinions and emotions. I specialize in color. I like to create some colors myself instead of sitting comparing the bottles in the art store. I understand what looks good together for what I want to say in my paintings. I also paint on jackets and champagne bottles. I made the move to creating on both of those more frequently 2019. I always have grand ideas that I always want to put out to the world. I am most proud of my 2021 solo exhibition curated with DeepRoots Experience. The paintings created for this show were a complete uninterrupted reflection of my art journey. I created the pieces for the purpose of getting the ideas out and telling my story and showing what I can do. Outside of my colors and paintings themself, my passion for what I do and willingness to help others sets me apart.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Most important thing is to always accept the growth and take everything that comes in stride. Your mental and physical health are very important to the creative process. Do not force yourself to create anything that does not fit who you are in life.
