Life & Work with Kassidy Autumn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kassidy Autumn.

Hi Kassidy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been interested in art for as long as I can remember holding a crayon. I remember my first tattoo that I got done was very meaningful, and beforehand, I figured that would be my only tattoo, but I was wrong… I was hooked! I instantly fell in love with super colorful pieces on my body, as I always loved lots of color in my own drawings and paintings at the time. The more time I spent in studios getting tattooed, the more of an interest I gained in tattooing as a career goal, or dream really. After some persistent nagging to my primary artist at the time, they decided to take me on as an apprentice. And the rest is history! I’m thankfully in a place after 5 years of starting an apprenticeship at the studio I’m at to where I get to just do colorful pieces I enjoy doing, and with some wonderful clientele as well.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Being an artist as a career is hard. Especially being a very sensitive, perfectionistic one. Starting out in the industry, I got a lot of hate and criticism for not being the best right away. It was really discouraging. I had to try to use it as fuel to be better and prove them wrong. The tattoo industry is also still very male-dominated. Clients in the studio would automatically assume I was just “counter girl” for a while. And occasionally still do. A lot of people also don’t realize how much time is committed into being a tattoo artist. My job isn’t over when I leave the studio for the day. I do booking and all my drawing at home so a lot of my time is very consumed with my art. It’s both good and bad. I love what I do but that makes it very easy for burnout.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a tattoo artist. I specialize in super colorful, kawaii, pop culture style art. I still haven’t decided quite what category I’d fit into. It’s definitely a newer style in the tattoo world and it’s very fun and happy and bright.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
A good true-crime podcast is always a go-to! I love Morbid and Crime Junkie
