Conversations with Brian Orlando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Orlando.

Brian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was a cynic. A doubter. Growing up the only things I cared about were music and professional wrestling. Home was loud and I couldn’t focus. School wasn’t exactly a welcomed escape. I learned how to listen to the feeling’s others had through the songs that called to me. I understood the concept of larger than life once the first professional wrestlers I ever saw appeared on my TV screen. I always knew these things would be a part of my life but with not a shred of musical talent or athletic skill, I wasn’t exactly sure how. 20 years ago, it all snapped into place when i became a radio DJ. Throughout all of this, my mother and all of her friends were psychics, tarot card readers and some even witches. I thought it was all so stupid. A bunch of women talking about what might happen instead of going out and living it, So I rejected anything metaphysical for most of my life. Maybe ten years ago I was asked to host a one-hour show with a renowned psychic medium and despite my disdain for psychic phenomena, I recognized the ratings potential and agreed. Afterall I wasn’t the one doing the readings, I was just the host. Withing the first few weeks I started to inadvertently read the callers myself, feeling more and more of emotions that weren’t familiar with each episode. One day I had a major panic attack before a routine evening. I rushed to my landlord’s part of the house to find her having a very similar episode to the one I was feeling. She described everything I just experienced a few minutes prior. The next day I called my mother and told her I was flying down to Florida to get pick up a deck of her tarot cards. She didn’t say much, but she knew I ready. While I was down there, she went over the basic definitions and a lot of it made sense since I had been around it for so long, but it wasn’t resonating. Yes, I understood but I wasn’t keen on relaying the information the same way. That’s when I realized I needed to use the one thing I understood more than most to make this journey legit and successful. Music. Rock and Roll Music with a little bit of pop culture, like wrestling became my vehicle to navigate through the definitions and possible scenarios of each card. That’s how Rock N Soul Tarot was born. First as a podcast, and then as a book.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No. Not everyone is accepting of metaphysical work, and it has caused complications. During my first tarot reading, I had barely an idea of what I was doing, I kept saying, “You have to spread your wings if you wanna fly to your next destination” I repeated it a few times and described a small plane as well. Nothing. Crickets. After 45 very LONG minutes, this woman looked at me and said, “Well I don’t know about any of this, but I did just get offered a position as a flight attendant for a private airline by one of my bar regulars “. I felt a lot of things… but I felt relief. I did have a slight idea about what I was doing

During my very first psychic medium gallery, a very famous guitar player whose poster was on my wall as a teenager was in the audience. So, I was a complete nervous wreck when I opened the evening by asking who had “A business decision about a time share in Aruba? No one spoke up. 18 pairs of eyes burned right through me, including my those of my guitar hero. Five minutes. No response. I felt like I was 18 facing life. Finally, my eyes locked with a woman who seemed very interested in the floor design. I asked her about the time share, the business decision, and the region again. With a heavy, annoyed sigh she admitted but owning a time share in Aruba for 27 years but didn’t speak up because I said the words “business decision” and she was “giving up the Time Share for good that week”

I thought it would be easier to experience affirmation. The truth is it doesn’t matter. I’m here to help people through tough times and make better decisions so more times are easier. If it were all sunshine and rainbows, I wouldn’t have such a full understand of the situations that arise in a reading. When I wrote my book, I had an amazing support system, but with a full-time radio job at the time, I had to wake up two hours before my scheduled start to my day just to get some chapters done. That was at 1 am. I was miserable, physically, writing that book while my emotions carried me through, knowing it was a major building block for mine and my families future

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For 20 years I worked behind the microphone as a radio DJ. I did talk radio, I did rock radio. The formats sometimes changed but the mission was the same. Connect the listener with their community. Share my experiences not as someone who has done more but done the same as those listening. My proudest accomplishment is raising over a quarter of a million dollars throughout my career for various charities that help veterans, foster animals, and those suffering from mental illness. I used music as an international language to connect all walks of life together. As I started to focus more on my spiritual side, it became apparent that my approach would be the same. Use music and personal experiences to build a connection. When I faced layoff in March after 12 years, I understood. Radio was a catalyst. Connecting people to their emotions, feelings, and experiences still happens every day. I simply do it on a more intimate level now. No matter what my “job” title is, connection is my calling

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Humility. I wrote Rock N Soul Tarot because I realized none of us look at the same situations the exact same way. My definition of love may not be close to what the person I’m reading considers love to be. Peace will look completely different to some. Triumph could be a million things. We all have our views on life, and my book is designed to help you develop your own definitions for each card, so when you’re facing a scenario that you yourself don’t consider “normal” you can apply my method to better understand what the clients “normal” is, Success is understanding that it’s not about you. It’s who you’re helping. Your clients. Your audience.
