Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay (Papa Sage) Hollingshed.
Hi Jay (Papa Sage), thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
“I had to heal myself before I could help anyone else heal.”
My journey into metaphysical and energy healing did not begin with a business plan, a professional certification, or even an understanding of what my life’s purpose would become. It began with a deeply personal need to survive, understand myself, and create a life beyond the conditions that shaped my childhood.
As a child and teenager, I lived with seven neurological, emotional, and learning-related conditions: anxiety, depression, combined-type ADHD, dyslexia, trichotillomania, a nervous tic disorder, and Tourette syndrome. Because of the visible symptoms associated with some of these conditions, I was frequently teased, bullied, and excluded. I was often the child standing outside the group—the one others avoided or did not quite understand.
For many years, I viewed myself as different, defective, and destined to fail. I did not believe I was “normal,” and I certainly could not imagine becoming an author, healer, doctoral student, or business owner.
Yet even during those difficult years, something within me refused to accept that my circumstances would define my future.
I began consciously imagining a life in which my psycho-emotional challenges no longer controlled me. At the time, I had no understanding of manifestation. I did not know the terminology, the spiritual principles, or the psychology behind it. I simply knew that I wanted to become someone different from the person my experiences had conditioned me to believe I was.
Through years of trial, error, self-observation, and personal transformation, I unknowingly entered a habitual state of manifestation. I eventually organized the principles that helped change my life into a ten-step process. Those steps became the foundation of my Amazon bestselling book, From F.A.I.L.U.R.E.: The Complete Manifestation Manual.
So, when people ask how I became a healer, the most honest answer is this: I first had to discover how to heal myself.
A second part of my journey had always been present in the background. From an early age, I felt a powerful connection to Eastern cultures and philosophies. I was fascinated by the food, clothing, martial arts, spiritual disciplines, healing traditions, and ways of life. That fascination never left me.
In 2017, purely out of curiosity, I scheduled my first Reiki energy-healing session. I expected an interesting cultural or spiritual experience. Instead, the session awakened something in me.
It was not necessarily the physical healing that changed my life. It was the unmistakable feeling that I had been introduced to my purpose.
Almost immediately, I became a student of the woman who performed the session. I studied under her for approximately 18 months before beginning to practice energy healing myself. From that moment forward, I never stopped learning. I continued studying and becoming certified in multiple energy-healing modalities, each one deepening my understanding of the relationship between the mind, emotions, body, spirit, and human energy field.
My interest in integrative healing was also shaped by decades of conventional healthcare experience. I spent 15 years working as a firefighter and emergency medical technician, seven years as an advanced wound-care technician in a children’s hospital emergency department, and three years as a pediatric mental-health specialist.
Those experiences gave me tremendous respect for Western medicine, particularly its ability to respond to emergencies, diagnose illness, stabilize patients, and treat acute physical conditions. However, I also became increasingly curious about the areas in which people continued to suffer despite receiving conventional treatment—especially when emotional trauma, chronic stress, unresolved grief, or deeply rooted energetic patterns were involved.
That curiosity led me to compare the Western medical model with healing traditions practiced throughout Eastern and Indigenous cultures. I began studying metaphysical principles and therapeutic approaches involving energy, frequency, vibration, sound, meditation, Reiki, biofield work, and shamanic healing. I studied traditions originating in Asia, became a shamanic apprentice, and later expanded my education to include African healing philosophies and methodologies.
Over time, I discovered that certain elements of these traditions, when applied in a specific sequence, produced a distinctive therapeutic experience. This system became my MPET Healing Method—Meditative Psychotherapy for Emotional Trauma.
The MPET Healing Method is designed to help uncover the deeper emotional and energetic roots of trauma. Rather than focusing exclusively on the conscious retelling of painful experiences, my method uses meditation, sound, vibration, energy healing, Reiki, and shamanic principles to help clients enter a deeply relaxed state in which emotional patterns may be recognized, processed, and released.
As I developed the method, I also researched published studies examining many of its individual components, including sound-based interventions, vibrational therapies, Reiki, meditation, and shamanic practices. That research helped me better understand how these modalities were being explored within clinical and therapeutic environments and strengthened my commitment to building a responsible bridge between ancient healing wisdom and contemporary wellness practices.
Today, I am the founder and owner of Quantum Mind Body Medicine, a holistic practice devoted to helping people address psycho-emotional trauma, chronic stress, energetic imbalance, and emotional pain through energy, frequency, vibration, meditation, and metaphysical healing.
Known professionally as “Papa Sage,” I serve as a Shamanic Healing Practitioner, Reiki Grandmaster, Human Biofield Tuning Practitioner, Quantum Touch Healing Practitioner, metaphysical healer, spiritual coach, and Ohio-licensed ordained Minister of Healing. I hold a Master of Science in Health Administration and am completing a PhD in Metaphysical Studies and Energy Medicine.
My work has also been shaped by my experience as a John Maxwell Certified Life Coach, an international bestselling author, and a contributor whose voice has appeared through platforms including Brainz Magazine and The Huffington Post.
However, my credentials are not the heart of my story.
The heart of my story is the child who once believed he was a failure.
It is the teenager who felt isolated because his mind and body expressed themselves differently.
It is the young man who could not yet see that the very challenges he wanted to escape would one day become the foundation of his calling.
My life now centers on helping others recognize that their present condition does not have to become their permanent identity. Pain can become purpose. Trauma can become insight. What once made us feel broken can eventually reveal where our greatest gifts have been hidden.
Service remains an essential part of that purpose. For more than a decade, I served as an executive board member of All T.H.A.T.—Teens Hopeful About Tomorrow—a Columbus nonprofit devoted to mentoring young people in academics, career development, and life skills. I also volunteer with Motherful, a Columbus organization providing community, resources, and support to single mothers.
Outside of my professional work, I find restoration through dancing, meditation, Qi Gong, nature, carpentry, and the culinary arts. My spiritual foundation is rooted in unconditional love, Christ Consciousness, service, and a profound reverence for the humanity within every person.
I am also a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, an organization whose principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and service closely reflect the values by which I strive to live.
Ultimately, my journey has never been about presenting myself as someone who has never struggled. It is about demonstrating what can happen when a person refuses to allow struggle to have the final word.
I did not become a healer because life was easy for me.
I became a healer because I learned how to transform what once hurt me into something that could help heal others.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the most difficult parts of this journey has not been learning the work—it has been continuing the work while being misunderstood by the very communities I hoped might recognize its value.
Because my healing methods extend beyond the cultural boundaries of Westernized Christianity, I have experienced rejection and, at times, exclusion from members of the religious community. Although this response does not represent every person of faith, many have viewed metaphysical and energy-based practices with suspicion simply because they do not fit within familiar religious teachings.
I have faced similar resistance from portions of the therapeutic community. My intention has never been to diminish the importance of licensed therapists, physicians, or conventional treatment. My background in emergency medicine, pediatric healthcare, and mental health has given me a deep respect for those professions. However, because my work approaches psycho-emotional distress through holistic, spiritual, and energetic frameworks, it is not always readily understood or accepted by those trained exclusively within conventional models.
Another significant challenge has been maintaining visibility on social media. I have repeatedly experienced unexplained declines in reach, disappearing conversations, and the removal of questions and responses related to my work. On one platform, despite having an audience of more than 50,000 followers, some posts have reached only 20 or 30 viewers. Whether this is the result of algorithmic restrictions, content classification, or another form of suppression, the effect has been the same: meaningful information has become increasingly difficult to place in front of the people who have chosen to follow me.
These experiences could easily become reasons to become discouraged, defensive, or silent. Instead, they have strengthened my spiritual resolve.
As I have grown, I have learned that purpose is not granted by public approval, religious institutions, professional communities, or social media algorithms. Therefore, it cannot be taken away by them.
My calling does not disappear because someone misunderstands it. My work does not lose its value because it challenges convention. And my purpose does not become less sacred because the road toward fulfilling it is difficult.
So I continue.
I continue studying. I continue serving. I continue refining my methods and allowing the lives of the people I help to speak louder than resistance.
There is a particular kind of freedom that comes when you realize that rejection cannot cancel your assignment. It may alter the path, delay the recognition, or test your faith—but it cannot remove what has been placed within you.
No person, institution, or platform can take away a spiritual purpose that was never theirs to give.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in working with the emotional and energetic patterns associated with psycho-emotional trauma and chronic pain. My approach uses energy, sound, frequency, vibration, meditation, and focused therapeutic intention to create experiences that clients often describe as deeply calming, restorative, and emotionally releasing.
Sound provides a familiar example of how measurable physical forces can influence human experience. A particular frequency can feel irritating or disruptive, while another may slow the breath, quiet the mind, and help someone enter a deeply relaxed state. Under specific physical conditions, sound vibrations can even cause materials such as glass to resonate and break. The frequency itself is measurable; the way it is experienced—and the response it produces—is personal, physiological, and, for many clients, profoundly meaningful.
I apply this same principle within my healing work: carefully selected forms of energy, frequency, and vibration are used to support relaxation, emotional regulation, body awareness, and the release of patterns clients associate with unresolved trauma or persistent discomfort.
That is one of the qualities for which I have become known. However, what distinguishes my work most is that I did not simply adopt one established modality. I developed my own structured system by integrating selected elements from multiple healing traditions and therapeutic practices.
That system is the MPET Healing Method—Meditative Psychotherapy for Emotional Trauma. It brings together components of sound-based practices, vibrational techniques, Reiki, meditation, biofield work, and shamanic healing in a specific sequence designed to help clients explore the deeper emotional and energetic dimensions of their experiences.
The method is informed by published research examining several of its individual components, while the MPET Healing Method itself represents my unique integration of those practices. My goal is to bridge ancient healing wisdom, modern wellness approaches, and decades of personal and professional healthcare experience into a method that is distinctly my own.
I do not simply perform energy healing—I have developed a disciplined method for using energy, frequency, and vibration to help people engage the deeper layers of emotional trauma and physical discomfort.
How do you think about luck?
When people ask what role luck has played in my life and business, I often tell them that I do not see it as luck. I see it as divine alignment—combined with years of preparation for the purpose I was eventually called to fulfill.
From the outside, someone might say I was fortunate to endure the challenges of my childhood because those experiences later prepared me to work as a pediatric mental-health specialist. I was able to recognize parts of myself in the children I served—the isolation, the misunderstood behaviors, and the emotional pain that is not always easy to express. What once felt like a burden became a source of empathy, insight, and connection.
Others might say I was lucky to spend so many years in the medical field. That experience allowed me to observe the strengths of the allopathic medical model firsthand, while also recognizing the areas where conventional approaches may not fully address the emotional, spiritual, and energetic dimensions of healing. It inspired me to study the healing systems of other cultures and explore how different traditions understand the relationship between the mind, body, and spirit.
Looking back, I can see that many of the experiences I once questioned were quietly preparing me. The trauma taught me compassion. The healthcare system taught me discipline and clinical awareness. My spiritual journey taught me to recognize purpose within both.
So, I would not call it luck.
I would call it preparation meeting divine alignment—every experience positioning me for the work I was ultimately meant to do.
