Exploring Life & Business with S.R.D. Harris of S.R.D. Harris Books, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to S.R.D. Harris.

Hi S.R.D., can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved books, language, words and stories. Growing up, I would ride my bike to my local library with a goal to read every single book in there, lol;-). I can not remember a time when I did “not” love books. I was actually featured in two children’s books as a child and always dreamed of becoming a published author some day, so when Covid forced a major career change for me, I knew it was the perfect time to start my publishing company.

My youngest daughter, Camryn B., took a very strong interest in helping me write my first book and became my amazing co-author! Our collection now includes 11 uplifting and empowering children’s books that foster a love of reading and teach valuable life lessons in a fun, rhyming format!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been lots of bumps in the road over the past 6 years, but they have taught us valuable lessons about perservering and how to navigate the publishing process with grace. When our first book manuscript was finished, we set out to find an illustrator and thought we had found a great match. Welp…that ended up not working out at allllll and we lost lots of money and valuable time that we could never get back. We were tempted to quit and just cut our losses, but dug deep to stick to our goal and get our first book published! Without that dogged determination, we would never have been able to inspire children all over the world and build a strong commUNITY of “book besties”!!

As you know, we’re big fans of S.R.D. Harris Books, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a mother-daughter author team that writes and publishes uplifting and empowering children’s books. Our goal is to spark a love of reading in children and also teach life lessons in a fun way! We love to spread book joy all over the world and love getting so much love and support from a diverse community of readers!

Themes such as self-love, empathy, compassion, healthy eating, bravery, kindness and money management are found weaving throughout our stories. Parents and educators can know that when they purchase our books, children will be inspired to love reading and have conversation starters to prompt introspection and character development.

I often visit with schools and organizations to inspire young people and it is one of my FAVORITE ways to connect with our readers and introduce our books to people from all backgrounds. The stories all have positive messages and lead to robust q&a sessions where we apply the lessons to real life situations and allow children to incorporate them into their daily lives.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I have always been a bit risk averse, lol;-). I am a Type-A planner with a degree in Financial Management, and I always evaluate the costs, pros and cons and potential return on investment before taking a risk. I think proper planning is extremely important, and also believe you will not know what magic you can create until you go for it! Every single thing you love was once just an idea in somebody’s mind. Think about that. Whatever idea/goal/dream you have in your heart could be someone’s next favorite thing! I encourage everyone to pursue their dreams and try to make the world a better place with your invention/contribution!!!
