Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Giancola.
Hi Christopher, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Mount Granita started in 2020 during the height of lockdown, when my partner and I were college students looking to create something meaningful during an uncertain time. The idea was inspired by my Sicilian heritage and memories of my great-grandmother making simple homemade granita. We felt Cleveland was missing the fresh, authentic Italian ice that had been part of my family’s traditions, so we began experimenting with recipes—our original lemon flavor alone took weeks to perfect.
We opened with a small sidewalk cart in Little Italy (right outside of my grandparents’ small apartment building), serving four flavors only made from real fruit and cane sugar. After three seasons of the cart, we made the big move to restore the vacant storefront in a building that has been in my family for more than 60 years. We uncovered its original brick, the maple floors, and my favorite part: the original tin ceilings. We opened the flagship shop in 2023, and today Mount Granita serves more than 20 scratch-made flavors, employs a growing team and offers pints year-round through markets across Northeast Ohio. What began as a spontaneous idea has grown into a way to preserve our family traditions, contribute to the neighborhood and create a place where people can enjoy summertime together.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Since we make everything from scratch using real fruit and carefully developed recipes, Mount Granita is truly a labor of love. Producing enough Italian ice to meet demand while maintaining the same flavor, texture and quality in every batch requires a great deal of time, physical work and attention to detail.
The buildout of our storefront was another major undertaking. We handled much of the design and construction ourselves, and we wanted to restore the historic character of the space rather than take the quickest or easiest route. Every decision—from installing historically accurate walk-up service windows and choosing the right stone which fit into the context of the neighborhood—required patience, problem-solving and care.
We have also had to learn how to grow from a small seasonal sidewalk cart into a full storefront with a larger team, more than 20 flavors and year-round retail products. That meant learning how to scale without losing the handmade quality and personal experience that made people support us in the first place.
The challenges have been significant, but they have also made the business more meaningful and helped shape Mount Granita into what it is today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Mount Granita is a family-owned Italian ice shop in the heart of Cleveland’s Little Italy. We specialize in fresh, Sicilian-inspired granita made from scratch with real fruit, cane sugar and carefully developed recipes. We began with four flavors from a small sidewalk cart and have since grown to offer more than 20 fruity, creamy and seasonal flavors, including classics such as lemon and strawberry alongside distinctive options like mint mojito, mascarpone, Modica chocolate and Amarena cherry.
What sets us apart is the amount of care that goes into every batch. We do not rely on premade syrups or artificial flavors. We source quality ingredients, prepare the fruit ourselves and balance each recipe to create a smooth, refreshing texture and a flavor that tastes natural. Because we do not use stabilizers or preservatives, our granita must also be carefully prepared by hand each day before it is served. It is a much more labor-intensive approach, but that freshness and quality are central to who we are.
We are also known for offering an experience that feels connected to the neighborhood. Our storefront is located in a historic family-owned building that we spent years thoughtfully restoring, preserving features such as the original brick, maple floors and tin ceilings. Guests order from our sidewalk window, gather outside and enjoy a product rooted in both Sicilian tradition and summertime in Little Italy.
Brand-wise, we are most proud that Mount Granita feels genuine, joyful and handcrafted. The branding is colorful and playful, but behind it is a serious commitment to quality, family history and community. We want readers to know that this is not a mass-produced frozen dessert or a typical chain experience. Every flavor, pint, detail of the shop and interaction with a guest receives personal attention. In addition to visiting our Little Italy storefront during the season, customers can find Mount Granita pints year-round at select markets throughout Northeast Ohio.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memories are the ones spent in the garden with my bisnonna (great-grandma). I would help her plant seeds, water plants, pull weeds and harvest vegetables. She loved spending time in the garden, and I loved being there with her there. I would give anything to pick weeds with her again.
