Inspiring Conversations with Sylvia Brownlee of Skin by Brownlee & Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia Brownlee.

Hi Sylvia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Sylvia Brownlee didn’t set out to build a brand. She set out to solve a problem the entire skincare industry kept ignoring: what happens to acne, hyperpigmentation, and aging skin when the “one-size-fits-all” solutions on the shelf were never built for skin like hers, or her clients’.
Three decades into a career as a licensed esthetician, Sylvia had already seen it all — she’d led cosmetology schools, trained other estheticians, and sat across from thousands of clients whose skin had been mislabeled, mistreated, or simply overlooked. Skin of color. Hormonal acne. Stubborn dark marks that no drugstore serum could touch. Sylvia kept hearing the same story: nothing works for me. So she built what didn’t exist.
That conviction became Skin by Brownlee & Co (SBBC) — a Cincinnati-born clinical skincare brand that has spent over a decade turning frustration into formulas. Today, SBBC is a full ecosystem: a product line spanning skincare, tools, and; a wholesale and subscription business reaching customers nationwide; in-person clinical services that bring her expertise directly to the people who need it most; and a virtual skincare program that puts her clinical eye in front of clients around the world, no matter their zip code.
But Sylvia isn’t just a founder — she’s a formulator, an educator, and a fixture in her city’s beauty economy. As a MORTAR Cincinnati Beauty TRIBE Leader, she’s actively mentoring the next generation of beauty entrepreneurs. That commitment now has real infrastructure behind it: through the Brownlee Method, Sylvia is building out continuing-education classes, certification workshops, and a clinical reference library to train working estheticians in the same protocols that built SBBC — while also coaching beauty founders on the business side of the industry: wholesale expansion, brand positioning, and how to turn a service-based business into a scalable product brand. For Sylvia, skin equity was never just about the client in the chair. It’s about making sure the next wave of beauty entrepreneurs — especially those who look like her — don’t have to build their business without a blueprint.
Now, Sylvia is stepping into her next chapter — a bold, public act of reinvention she’s calling “After the Shift.” It’s the same philosophy she’s preached to clients for years, finally turned inward: skin is never the finish line, transformation is a practice, and confidence is built in public, not hidden behind closed doors. It’s this rare combination — clinical credibility, entrepreneurial grit, and an unfiltered willingness to document her own evolution — that makes Sylvia Brownlee a standout voice for any conversation about beauty, business, aging, reinvention, or what it really takes to build a brand from the treatment room up.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
People look at the brand now — the products on shelves, the full client book — and assume it came together smoothly. It didn’t, and honestly, it still doesn’t. That’s just entrepreneurship: something is always popping up.
Staffing has probably been the constant thread. Finding people who care about the client the way I do, who can hold the standard when I’m not in the room — that’s rare, and it hasn’t gotten easier as we’ve grown. Building a loyal clientele took its own kind of patience too, especially serving skin that’s been dismissed elsewhere — you’re not just earning a customer, you’re rebuilding someone’s trust in skincare itself.
Then there’s the pressure of being the founder — people expect more from you than from anyone else on the team, and that doesn’t come with an off-switch. And on top of the clinical work and the product work, I’ve also had to become a content creator — a whole new skill set I didn’t start out with, layered onto an already full plate.
But if I’m honest, the biggest challenge — the one that’s followed me the longest — is finding the right team to grow and scale with. It’s one thing to be great at what you do. It’s a completely different skill to build people around you who can carry that standard forward, and I’m still learning that in real time.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
SBBC is a full-service skincare ecosystem — skincare products and tools, in-person clinical services here in Cincinnati, and a virtual program that lets us treat clients anywhere in the world. We’re also building out training and mentorship for other beauty professionals. Whatever door someone walks in through, it all comes from the same clinical foundation — and it’s still shaped by client feedback, not just by what I think should come next.

Honestly? That I haven’t given up. This has not been easy — there’s a version of this journey where it would’ve been simpler to quit, and I didn’t. I’m constantly pivoting, constantly trying to stay innovative, because standing still isn’t an option in this industry. And through all of it, my clients have stayed at the center of every decision — their input matters to me, and a lot of what SBBC has become exists because I listened to them, not just because I had a plan on paper.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’d describe myself as resilient and adaptable. I don’t quit when things get hard — I pivot. I’m always looking for the next innovative way forward, and I stay close enough to my clients that they’re often the ones showing me what that next move should be.
