Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Legend.
Hi Anthony, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A lot of this really started with my two dogs, Atlas and Sedona. So my dog Atlas is a border collie-shepherd mix, Sedona’s a mini Aussie-border collie mix. I was already pretty active and at some point I just started running them more seriously instead of doing the usual walk around the block thing. Neither of them really settled at home with just a normal walk. So I got more consistent with the running. Sticking to the same days, same routes and pretty quickly I started noticing a difference. They looked better physically, the responded better to the daily structure, but there was more to to than just that. I’d always have people in public or at the local park commenting on it. Noticing how calm they were, how they weren’t dragging me on the leash or losing their minds every time another dog walked by. Which were all great compliment but something about it always stuck with me.
At the time it was just something I did because I liked doing it, not because I thought there was a business in it. But I kept noticing the same gap in other people’s dogs around me. They’d get walked, maybe get “some” activity and still come home wound up. That gap between “getting exercise” and actually settling down is what got me curious about whether the structure itself was the missing piece. And when I say structure, meaning: the same rhythm, same routes, every week, instead of random activity with your dogs.
That’s really where SPENT started and honestly it wasn’t some big plan. I just couldn’t stop noticing the pattern. It slowly turned from “my thing with my dogs” into an actual system: structured running, controlled pacing, repeat routes, fixed weekly days.
I’ve spent a lot of time since figuring out what that system actually is and just as important, what it isn’t. Now today SPENT is built around that same core idea: qualifying dogs, consistent weekly output, delivered in a way that’s controlled and repeatable.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely taken some figuring out. One of the hardest parts has honestly just been explaining SPENT.
People hear dogs and running and place it somewhere near dog walking. Other times I’ve gone too far the other way and made it sound more complicated than it needs to be. Most of the challenge has been finding the middle where someone gets why this is different without needing a whole explanation first.
The real-world side has taught me a ton too. A route can look perfectly fine until you start paying attention to the crossings, the pavement, other dogs in the area, the weather and how a particular dog is responding in real-time during and after the run. To me those are the small details that matter. They ultimately forced me to slow down and build the service around what I could repeat safely and consistently. Those are the kind of things you don’t really see until you’ve done it for real, way more than once.
I’ve also had to resist the urge to make SPENT broader just because broader services are easier for people to understand. I’m still learning, but the business has become much clearer by paying attention to what actually holds up instead of trying to make every idea fit. It’d honestly be simpler to just say “yeah, I walk dogs too” and leave it there. But that’s not really what this is, so I’ve tried to stay honest about that even when it’s the harder sell.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SPENT K9?
SPENT K9 is what I’m building right now. I run qualifying dogs on fixed weekly days, usually right in their own neighborhood, using familiar repeat routes and controlled pacing.
A lot of the work happens before and after the run. I’m watching how the dog handles the pace, then hearing from the owner about recovery and what they notice later at home. A dog looking tired at the door doesn’t tell me much on its own. What happens over the rest of that day and into the next one matters more.
The idea started with my own two dogs, Atlas and Sedona, but it became more serious when I began seeing that the same kind of structure could be useful for other dogs too. Some dogs move through a normal routine without it carrying very far into the day. SPENT gives the right dog a more consistent weekly outlet.
I’m building it carefully because the details are the service. The fixed rhythm, familiar routes, pacing, and knowing which dogs are actually suited for it all matter more than trying to serve everybody.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Honestly, I used to read a ton. Self-development, business, whatever I could get my hands on. At some point I started putting more energy into applying what I already knew instead of constantly taking in more, and that has stuck with me. These days I don’t watch much TV or really follow sports. If something isn’t useful or genuinely interesting to me, I usually don’t make much room for it.
Most of that time goes to YouTube now, pretty much every day. It might be business ideas, learning a new skill, or whatever happens to be useful that day. Sweat Equity Podcast and UpFlip are two YouTube channels that got me thinking more seriously about building a business. Further back, probably ten plus years ago now, I listened to a podcast frequently called How I Built This with Guy Raz. I liked hearing stories on how people who had actually built something found their way into it.
For actual downtime, it’s sailing channels, which is probably a little unexpected for someone who runs dogs for a living. SV Delos, Sailing Zatara, and Gone With the Wynns are a few that inspire me although that is less about sailing and more about people getting out and doing something.
That is probably the common thread in what I like now. I would rather watch someone actually doing the thing than read another book explaining how to do it if that answers the question.
