Meet Mark Joshua of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Joshua.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up in a Filipino household definitely set me up to pursue a career music. While none of my family members growing up pursued music, I have so many memories of being sung to by those who raised me or punching the keys on the piano in the living room. I remember putting on performances of the latest NSYNC song or whatever songs the Wiggles were singing on the television.

I wrote my first song when I was four. It was a rip-off (some would call it a parody) of a Backstreet Boys song. That was the first time I remember taking a thought/idea in my head and creating something I could call my own (with a percentage of it going to the Backstreet Boys). This led to me learning guitar. At 13, I wrote and posted a song I wrote. The feedback and support from my friends, family, and strangers pushed me to keep growing in the craft. Eventually, it turned into writing as a form of therapy and reflection. 17 years later, I feel like I’m definitely a songwriter first and performer second.

Ultimately though, I just love the feeling of connection and being human. The fact there are complete strangers who enjoy and have told me my music has had some sort of emotional impact on their lives is still absolutely crazy to me. I’ve always enjoyed making a connection with people and the most natural way I do is through music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not smooth. Lots of doubt, insecurity, and imposter syndrome. Performing to no one or disappointments with opportunities that you think are going to be career-defining. Ultimately though, I wouldn’t want it any other way. The lows allow the highs to feel that much better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a songwriter. I specialize in the Singer/Songwriter and pop genres. Professionally, I am most proud of the catalog of music I have released.

Truthfully, I’m not sure what sets me apart. I don’t think that I can answer that. I’m just a person who makes music because I like it and sometimes need the reminder that I’m not alone in this world.
