Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Couch.
Hi Logan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am the proud owner of Couch Creative Media, a video and photo company that has been going strong for over 6 years in the Greater Cincinnati Area. My camera has taken me all the way from Elton John’s farewell tour to NCAA tournaments to 100+ wedding days. I specialize in documentary videography and photography and every day I get to do what I love.
12 years ago I was a high schooler in Versailles, KY taking his first media class. I covered school news, edited sports highlights, and wrote and starred in comedy skits. I watched YouTube tutorials every night and totally immersed myself in all things camera and editing. Through the work I did in my media program I remembered the joy I felt as a kid who loved art class and wanted every painting-drawing-sculpting toy he saw on TV. I knew what I wanted to do with my life for what felt like the first time. I enrolled and eventually graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a bachelors degree in Electronic Media & Broadcasting. As a student I worked many jobs including a sports broadcaster for ESPN, videographer for Boone County Public Library, and production assistant for a local commercial studio.
Fun Fact: I was supposed to travel abroad to Australia for my last semester in college…in spring of 2020…so that was cancelled and I had no choice but to lock in and take everything I learned from university and internships and officially start my own business upon graduating. Through my good and bad experiences in the workforce I realized I wanted to have more control over my fate when it comes to my career, so why not just become my own boss? I am the one who defines what a job well done is and feels the benefits from doing so. I wanted to be behind the camera and in the editing room, but also the face of the company building those client relationships and delivering directly to them. I think something that sticks with my clients is how much fun I have while working because I love my job and look forward to every shoot I do.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been about as smooth as sandpaper hahaha. I once heard someone in the industry say when hiring they always ask the candidate if they have ever broken any equipment, and if they say no then it’s not a good fit. I have broken my fair share of camera gear and made many mistakes during my journey, and each time has also been an opportunity to learn and grow. The path to becoming a full-time creative is not an easy one, and there is plenty of unfamiliar territory to navigate.
Did you know I’m not only a professional photographer but am also an accountant, producer, writer, social media manager, salesperson, and front desk receptionist for my company? I wear many different hats to make sure all facets of my business are running smoothly (still improving on my accounting). As a creative starting freelance you may think it’s your work that sticks with people but it’s actually how easy you are to work with behind the scenes and partially how fast you can respond to emails.
I think any full-time professional artist has gone through what I call the struggle period, where you’re doing a lot of work, putting your heart into everything you do to make a good product and get your name out there, while also not making that much money. The hardest thing for me during that time was loving what I do, but not being sure if my dream job was enough to provide for myself and eventually others who’d depend on me. Now I’m on the other side feeling like I’m cashing the checks I’ve been writing for years, and having more fun than ever.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am both a videographer and photographer who has experience shooting about everything there is, and through years of immersing myself in the field I have niched down to weddings, events, small businesses, and commercial projects. I love the wide variety of work I do and it has introduced me to so many wonderful people I wouldn’t have met otherwise.
I’ve been a part of some big events like the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and John Michael Montgomery’s last concert, but the work I have enjoyed the most and am the most proud of is my wedding videos. They’re designed for couples and their families to watch for years to come, putting one of the biggest day of their lives into a literal movie to watch and remember. The wedding films are documentary technical achievements combining footage, audio, interviews, and music into a specially made handcrafted package.
I’ve met a lot of talented camera operators and editors, but what’s made me a successful artist and business owner is the relationships I’m able to build with clients and others in my field. When clients book with me they not only get someone who knows what they’re doing, but also someone who deeply cares about their experience. I am extremely proud of the work I do and how I’ve done it without letting business come before my humanity.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
The best way to get in touch with me is filling out a submission form on my website or sending a message my way on social media, you can typically expect a response within 24-48 hours. Project needs often vary and so does pricing, the best way to get a quote is by reaching out, I swear I don’t bite. I also recently opened up a print shop on my website for some kind people who asked to buy my photos.
