Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Price.
Hi Joshua, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always loved spicy food, and I have also always been a fan of various sauces. When I was a young child, I tasted a family friend’s homemade pepper mustard, and really enjoyed it. It was a taste that I hadn’t had before, and couldn’t forget. As I got older, I experimented, creating my own recipes for something similar to that taste that had stuck with me from childhood. In doing so, I made it for family and friends. in 2018 a family friend convinced me to try and sell it, which I never had any intention of doing. My brother had a large excess of peppers from his garden, so I made a batch and listed it for sale on a local Facebook group in my small community. It gained some attention, and people kept inquiring for more. I eventually then got up and running in a commercial kitchen.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a totally smooth road. First off, as a full time teacher, I do not have a lot of time to give to the business. At first I believed I would be able to produce under the cottage food industry laws. I soon found out that I needed to stop production and start over with proper certifications. This was a learning experience for sure. One other bump in the road (that in hindsight was pretty funny) was after making a large batch one evening, I was transporting my completed product out to my vehicle late at night, and I accidentally spilled the cart, and in turn had to get rid of the whole batch, because of possible glass contamination. Needless to say, it wasn’t funny at the time, but it made a good story, and funny pictures.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Price’s Macho Mustard is a sweet and spicy pepper mustard, and comes in Regular and Extra Hot. In 2024 the Extra Hot version won the Bronze Medal in the World Wide Mustard Competition in category “Pepper Mustards – Hot!” This took place at the National Mustard Museum in Wisconsin. Our small batch mustard is sweet at first with a kick at the end. Each batch is hand made with care and passion. What we are most proud of is the fact that we have a very high percentage of returning customers.
Readers should know that we are a company that focuses on the quality of our product. We grow our own peppers seasonally for our product, and we are proud to work with local restaurants in our area to have on their menu, and sell retail as well.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would probably be the few full family vacations that we took as our large family. I have 6 siblings (5 brothers and 1 sister), and we did not regularly vacation, but the few times we did, were very memorable. I loved chasing around my 5 older brothers, and having my younger sister chase me.
