Life & Work with Ashley Short of Van Wert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Short.

Hi Ashley, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Salsa’s Legacy Rescue was founded in June 2025 by a young woman whose heart has always belonged to animals. Growing up, her natural connection with creatures great and small earned her the nickname “Ellie May.” One of her first rescues? A tiny, orphaned baby possum she cleaned it up and safely delivered it to a wildlife center. That same spirit of compassion now fuels this rescue.

I’m Ashley Short, the proud founder of Salsa’s Legacy Rescue — a passion-driven organization dedicated to giving animals a second chance at life and love. — With years of hands on experience as a pet sitter, kennel attendant, lab technician, and veterinary assistant, I’ve devoted my life to understanding and caring for animals of all kinds. Every role I’ve held has deepened my commitment to rescue work and strengthened my belief that every animal deserves compassion, care, and a forever home. Salsa’s Legacy Rescue was born out of that belief – and inspired by a very special companion who left a lasting mark on my heart. Through this rescue, I aim to continue that legacy by providing medical care, safe shelter, and loving placement for animals in need. Whether you’re looking to adopt, foster, volunteer, or support our mission, I’m so glad were here. Together

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting out in rescue wasn’t always easy. It’s mentally, physically, and emotionally taxing. Some days are crazy, and so many unexpected things can happen. Emergencies come out of nowhere. Plans change in an instant. You can go from a quiet morning to rushing to save a life within minutes.

I love what I do, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. But one of the hardest lessons has been learning that you can’t say yes to every pet — even when you so badly want to.

Turning animals away doesn’t mean we don’t care. Sometimes it means we simply don’t have the space, resources, or funding to properly care for them. That’s the heartbreaking reality of rescue.

We run solely on donations and are not government funded. Every dollar, every share, and every bit of support makes a difference in helping us continue this mission.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I began modeling at 18 and absolutely loved the experience. It gave me the opportunity to travel for the first time, meet incredible people, and grow both personally and professionally. Modeling was exciting, creative, and so much fun.

But long before the cameras and travel, my heart belonged to animals.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a deep love for animals — often bringing home stray cats because I simply couldn’t leave them behind. Helping animals has always been second nature to me; it’s not just something I do, it’s who I am.

Today, my focus is devoted to rescue work and my organizations, Salsa’s Legacy Rescue and Ashley’s Compassionate Pet Care.

Through Salsa’s Legacy Rescue, I provide love, advocacy, and compassion for animals big and small — with a special place in my heart for our feral and community cat population. I’m deeply committed to Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), education, and community outreach to create humane, long-term solutions and reduce suffering.

Through Ashley’s Compassionate Pet Care, I offer in-home pet sitting and mobile nail trim services designed to be gentle, personalized, and low-stress. As a Fear Free Certified professional, I prioritize comfort, trust, and respectful handling — treating every pet as if they were my own.

My mission is simple: to serve animals with patience and compassion, to educate and advocate, and to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Some advice I’d give to anyone just starting a rescue is to start small don’t rush into helping every kitty or dog that needs you. That was one of the hardest lessons for me. It’s okay to say no. You have to know your limits so you can provide quality care to the animals you do take in.

I also wish I understood sooner it’s okay to ask for help. Reach out to other rescues, build relationships, and work as a team. We’re all in this for one reason the animals. No one can do it alone, and collaboration makes the work stronger and more sustainable.

When you’re first starting out, your heart will be bigger than your resources — and that’s normal. But space, time, finances, and emotional energy all matter. Taking on too much too quickly can lead to burnout, and that doesn’t help you or the animals.

Sustainable rescue work is about consistency, teamwork, and knowing your limits.

Helping one animal really well is better than stretching yourself thin trying to save them all.

Build a support system, set clear boundaries, and don’t feel guilty for protecting your capacity. The goal isn’t to do everything — it’s to do what you can, responsibly and with care
