Check Out Janelle Wolfe’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Wolfe.

Hi Janelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Well the truth is I never wanted or desired to do hair or have a beauty business. In 2013 I was living life just trying to survive and take care of my sons, I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do career wise since every attempt I had made up to that point didn’t work out. I was just going with the flow when a small moment of me playing around in a friend’s hair quickly spiraled into me being strongly encouraged to go to hair school. I mean it was so out of left field, I never even considered doing hair. I didn’t even do my own hair, I had been getting my hair done professionally since middle school so I was completely taken aback. However, I did reluctantly contact the Beauty School to get information and next thing I know they were enrolling me and I was in class two weeks later, the rest is history.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes it was obstacles! It was a smooth process to get into hair school and it was fairly straightforward going through the process. Yet, the challenge was I felt very intimidated in class, I lacked confidence and didn’t feel like I was as good as many of my classmates. But once my instructor told me I was a natural and she thought I had been doing hair for years, I gained more confidence and I was able to find my way. I quickly excelled through the program, I graduated at the top of my class, gained a reputation in doing Silk Presses and growing hair and graduated in 10months.

The other obstacles came after getting licensed, finding the right salon and building a clientele, marketing, and finding my niche was more challenging than I expected. Even once in a salon, clients don’t just fall into your chair plus the beauty industry is very saturated. I had to really hustle which I wasn’t used to. In hair school clients come looking to get their hair done for a low price but in the real world you have to prove you’re the hairstylist a client should trust verse the next stylist. You have to be built for this.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a healthy hair specialist & consultant. I help men and women to reframe their mind around their hair, address problems with scalp health and hair growth & health. I focus on natural hair and bring a holistic approach to the hair care regimes I give to clients. We talk about their lifestyle, diet, physical health, vitamin deficiencies, hair care routine, etc. It’s all connected.

I am known for silk presses and healthy hair. The majority of my clients have come to me with hair challenges or growth concerns that I am able to help them overcome with real results.

I am most proud of the positive impact I make in each client’s life that I serve. Our hair is a big part of our identity so when we’re experiencing issues it weighs heavily on our confidence, so to be able to help someone reach their hair goal, see themselves as beautiful, gain confidence, and love their hair is the best reward.

I think what really sets me apart is I’m not money driven I’m results driven. I love what I do and I’m very passionate about it and it shows, my clients often tell me they can tell I love it.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Our city is growing, evolving, expanding and rebuilding. I really like this because it makes room for new opportunities and people. It also helps to strengthen our economy which impacts our communities.

I don’t like that our city tends to be slower to pivot and adjust to the new trends and progression in terms of industries in particular the beauty industry. We seem to be behind in contrast to big cities. We don’t have a lot of things to do entertainment wise or socially. Many of the places we had have closed down or turned into something else. And mostly, we need more positive outlets for our youth.
