Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Aitken.
Hi Garrett, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I actually got started in all of this randomly. I left home and got a job doing the same thing I did at my family’s business during college. It really wasn’t something I wanted to do so I stopped. I didn’t really know what I was going to do at the time, but I had always been into art and had at least some level of a knack for it. I found a camera on my shelf that my dad had bought me the better part of a decade before that. I started figuring out settings, things I liked, things I didn’t, and spent tons of time on Youtube. It has been a lot of learning, experimenting, trying to put myself out there ever since and luckily it has seemed to work out pretty well!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not smooth at all. It took a bit to get going, then once I got a lot of local work, we moved. I tried to replicate that in the next place we moved but it went a bit slower and we decided we didn’t want to stay there anyway. We have since moved a few more times which made it hard to establish myself any one place, but I eventually started working on finding work that wasn’t so location dependent and also worked with agencies who found the work for me. Those two steps were when I started to find some sort of a stride.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a videographer. I like to think I am a pretty versatile one. I started out with photography which helped me develop a good eye for framing which is still something I consider to be a strong suit. Through initially working with agencies and then expanding to working more of my own jobs, I’ve been on all kinds of shoots ranging from larger projects like working on a movie set to smaller things like helping someone film content for their start up. There are a fair bit of projects that I’m able to look back on and be proud of, but I also know the best work is yet to come.
What’s next?
I’d love to be able to grow my base a bit more locally in Cleveland and not take as many travel shoots. In 2025, I took over 50 flights. Traveling for shoots can be fun here and there but I’d love to grow something bigger in this city. I’ve done awesome projects here and feel like I’m trending in a great direction here so it is mostly just keeping up the momentum and not allowing myself to get complacent.
