Today we’d like to introduce you to William Ong.
Hi William, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
“I taught drum lessons in music shops for many years, but the small lesson rooms and limited equipment made it difficult to offer the kind of instruction I wanted—often we had to rely on practice pads or mesh heads with silent cymbals. I also couldn’t provide recording or video services for students who wanted to create covers or their own drumming content. In 2017, I decided to start my own business to offer a more complete learning experience. It really began to take off in 2020 during the pandemic.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
“It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—it’s a constant rollercoaster, but I love what I do. 2024 was my toughest year; at one point, I genuinely thought I might have to close the studio and return to teaching in music shops. Fortunately, I was able to ride out the storm, refocus, and rebuild. I centered my energy on my students, refined my lessons, and put significant work into improving my website. That regrouping helped me move forward with a clearer direction.”
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about ONG DRUM STUDIO?
Ong Drum Studio is a full-service drumming studio in Columbus dedicated to helping students grow as musicians through personalized, high-quality instruction.
I specialize in one-on-one drum lessons for all ages and skill levels, focusing on strong fundamentals, musicality, and helping each student develop their own voice on the instrument. What I’m most known for is creating a supportive, creative environment where students feel comfortable, motivated, and excited to learn.
What sets Ong Drum Studio apart is the range of services I offer beyond traditional lessons. Students can record drum tracks, film drum covers, rehearse, and even get help with drum setup, tuning, or preparing for performances and gigs. It’s a place where drummers can learn, create, and level up all in one space.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of building a studio that feels authentic, welcoming, and deeply student-focused. My goal has always been to provide the type of experience I couldn’t offer in music shops—real drums, real production capabilities, and real support for every drummer’s individual journey.
What I want readers to know is that Ong Drum Studio isn’t just a lesson room—it’s a community hub for drummers who want to grow, make music, and feel inspired. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a working musician, there’s a place for you here.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
“A lot of my drive comes from the influence of my parents rather than any specific book or podcast. My mother instilled in me a strong work ethic and the importance of getting things done instead of putting them off. My father was the one who inspired my love for music and ultimately my desire to teach.
At this stage in my life and career, I’m largely self-motivated. I’m driven by the goal of sharing my knowledge and helping drummers become more well-rounded musicians. Part of that comes from wanting to give my students the resources, guidance, and opportunities I wish I had when I first started playing—or even during my touring years. That mission keeps me focused, learning, and pushing forward every day.”
