We recently had the chance to connect with Dewey Rice Jr and have shared our conversation below.
Dewey , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, being a creative is what really brings me joy. Even though my day job is in marketing—creating content, managing social media, editing videos, and graphic design—there’s just something that hits different when working on my personal brand and podcast. With my own content, there are no rules or limitations. I can say what I want, create how I want, and express myself in whatever way feels right to me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Dewey Rice Jr., I’m a content creator who loves to put it on and create, a podcast host who never turns down a good debate, and someone who brings the vibes wherever I go. I’m college-educated, work professionally in marketing, and I’m also a business owner. In 2020, I launched my podcast Prescribed with the Realest, and I’m currently building my presence as an up-and-coming lifestyle content creator.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
This question is actually a funny one because I was just having a conversation with someone about what it means to feel “seen.” I still find myself stuck or taken aback when people speak highly of me or point out things about myself that I might not recognize. From an early age—whether it was a teacher, administrator, coach, or even a bystander—I was often told I was “different,” “destined for greatness,” or that I was “going to be somebody one day.” But honestly, those affirmations didn’t really start to stick until adulthood, when I was facing life head-on and still pushing through. So, I’d say a lot of people have seen—and continue to see—me in moments when I didn’t or couldn’t see myself.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Was there ever a time I almost gave up? Honestly—every other day (lol). But for real, there are definitely moments when I want to “give up”—not on life itself, but on the version of life I’m working toward. In today’s world, everything moves so fast. People are blowing up overnight, and it can be discouraging to watch, especially when you’re putting in the same effort and hoping for your moment too.
What keeps me grounded, though, is the fact that I genuinely love what I do. Even in those moments when I feel like saying “whatever,” that love always pulls me back. If I could create content full-time and have it cover all my living expenses, I absolutely would. I truly enjoy it—and I love seeing the impact and influence my work has on others.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie the influencer industry tells itself is that there’s a certain look, aesthetic, or profile that defines an influencer. I don’t agree. Influence exists in every space—within friend groups, families, and communities. You don’t have to try to be an influencer—sometimes, you just are. It’s not about what you wear, what you drive, or how much money you have. People can spot authenticity from a mile away, and that’s what truly draws others in and builds real influence.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew I only had 10 years left to live, I’d immediately stop worrying about opinions I can’t change and things I can’t control. As the oldest child in a family of six, an over-thinker, a perfectionist, and someone who’s always pushing to outdo myself, I’ve realized how much time gets wasted on things that don’t truly matter. In today’s world, we spend so much energy consumed by the opinions of others—opinions that, honestly, were never that important. When we tap into what really matters and focus on where we’re trying to go, we start to recognize just how much unnecessary stress we’ve been carrying. So yeah, if that were the case, the only person I’d be trying to prove anything to, is myself.
