We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rob H. Check out our conversation below.
Rob, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I wake up shower, then while eating breakfast I look to see what messages I have, personal and business, and I respond to those. Then I make sure I am prepared for what jobs are on the schedule and I gather my things and go to meet my team at the truck. We work until we are done with everything then come home, figure out the pay for the day, shower, and make dinner. Then I make sure everything is caught up with work. After all that, depending on the day, I either have soccer, play video games with my friends or have some friends over. I don’t have many days off but when I do I need to catch up on housework, hopefully do something fun with family or friends, plan my next vacation and work on some important company related task.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Rob Houk owner of 404 Moving & More LLC. We are a small moving company that does small jobs as well as big house moves. What makes us different is that we will move items from one room to another, assemble furniture, hang artwork and mount TVs. There is no job too small for us. We have been in business for 4 years and I am currently working on getting a second truck and having 2 crews running.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child and growing up I thought I would not amount to much and be stuck in an average 9-5 job and not be very happy with it. I was never good at school and thought I knew what I wanted to do when I grew up but that all changed when I got my first and only job working at a furniture store. Now I am not doing anything close to what I expected, I create my own schedule, have a successful company and love life other then working all day everyday.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I almost gave up with my company. I had a very trying week fairly recently where I had some issues with customers and with my team. In the moment I almost cried and thought about closing the company but I knew that calling my mom and one of my good friends would set me straight. I talked to them both and they each had similar thoughts and gave me new ideas to restore my mind.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to believe that its not all about who you know and that you can do it on your own. Now that I have a business I have learned that I was wrong. Everything is about who you know and the connections you make with people. I need to get better at making those connections but I would not be where I am today without connections.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am definitely doing what I was born to do. Moving things for people is my ikigai, my purpose in life. I always knew I liked to help people and needed to do something meaningful where I could help people but I didn’t know how. Now as a business owner I can help people all the time by giving them excellent service for an affordable rate.
