Charissa Gracyk of Toledo on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Charissa Gracyk. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Charissa, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I wandered for a very long time, but now I feel like I’m finally on the right path and walking in the direction I’m supposed to be headed. I stopped chasing things not meant for me and opened myself up to what is–and it’s been the best decision ever. Suddenly, when you’re on the right path, opportunities start to present themselves and things begin working out. And I’m incredibly grateful. Better late than never!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Charissa Gracyk, and I write fast-paced, steamy romantic suspense. My books have protector heroes and strong heroines, and after you read one, it should feel like you just watched a big blockbuster action movie. I’ve always loved movies, especially adventure films like Indiana Jones, and I try to bring that same level of excitement and fun to my stories.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed I could do anything, and I felt like I had forever to accomplish the things I wanted to do. Now, as an adult, I know no one lives forever, that time is finite, so it’s important to spend your time with the people you love and to focus on the things that bring you joy. Nothing lasts forever, so I try to make each moment count.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I’ve learned there’s an important difference between giving up and letting go. I spent twenty years in Hollywood, chasing after a dream that I later realized wasn’t what I wanted most. Once I went back to writing romance novels, I came full circle, moved back home and I’ve never been happier. Sometimes something better is waiting for you, and it took me a while to understand that letting one thing go, something not meant for me, doesn’t mean I gave up. It just allowed another door to open with a brand new opportunity.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I don’t think anyone ever shows his or her full self completely in public. Certain things are kept private. But for the most part, what you see is what you get with me. I try to be as friendly and genuine as I’d like people to be with me.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I’m doing what I was born to do–writing stories that entertain and let people escape the real world for a while. But for a very long time, I worked jobs I didn’t like for a paycheck. Now I’m finally getting paid to do what I love and I’m embracing being a full-time author.
