An Inspired Chat with Sarah Strunk of Old Brooklyn

We recently had the chance to connect with Sarah Strunk and have shared our conversation below.

Sarah, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I am leaving my corporate job to pursue motherhood. I am jumping into the unknown and working towards my greatest creation, my son.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sarah Strunk, I am an interdisciplinary artist creating as Sarah Nichol Creations. I was raised in the military with my mother having pursued her career in the Air Force. I was raised on military bases and not having a hometown. I am currently working on turning my artwork into oracle decks having just finished the Oracle of Inner Transformation.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My dad always encouraged me to be who I was. He encouraged me to stand in my femininity and not get caught up in feminist propaganda. Of course having a feminist mother, I didn’t see how much he actually supported me until after his sudden death in 2021.

When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
When I was sad or scared as a child, I always ran to the arts. Whether poetry or drawing, I always found solace and my voice where I dared not say it aloud.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Motherhood is the best thing we can do as women. We’re taught to want so much more when Motherhood is integral to our survival as a species. Our jobs won’t be there at our deathbed and if the job is chosen over children, they might not be either.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I was always doing what I was told to do, and that is hard work all the time regardless of how they treat you. Now I’m stepping in to trying to do what I think I was born to do by creating these Oracle decks and having my art speak for itself
