Kyrsta Morehouse shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Kyrsta, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My family is my biggest joy! It’s the best feeling to come home to them at the end of a long day where my partner is waiting with a kiss, and my dog Noodle and kitty Bo are wagging their tales for cuddles! They are my whole heart and complete silly goobers.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Of course! I am Kyrsta Morehouse, a licensed esthetician and celebrity makeup artist. I moved to Ohio from Los Angeles where I worked in beauty and FX makeup for the film industry for 13+ years and was a makeup instructor for 6+ years. I love makeup but wanted to be able to provide long lasting results for my clients rather than something they simply wash off at the end of the day. I now have my own business at Esthetics By Kyrsta in Barberton where I can offer facials, lash and brow treatments, makeup, full body waxing, scalp treatments and more!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I was an undiagnosed autistic child who internalized everything! This led me to often feel like I was broken since my brain didn’t always function the way everyone else around me was. Therapy, understanding autism, and taking up space has helped me a lot to understand that I was NEVER broken, I was just trying to squeeze myself into a neurotypical box that was never meant for me.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
We did it! I think I had a lot of moments as a child where I didn’t really know where I would end up, I was passionate about many things but wasn’t sure which one would become a full career, etc. Its so exciting to finally be in a place where I am finding work and home life balance, where everyday I come in to my studio I am so excited to see clients, and overall I feel like I can breathe a little easier and enjoy life rather than watch it pass me by.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think the beauty industry as a whole, has deep roots in making people feel insecure. What I mean by that is, if we make people think acne is the worst thing in the world then they will spend millions trying to erase it at home, etc. That basis not only just feeds capitalism but it feeds on your insecurity and convincing you that everything will be better if you just buy this cream. My approach to esthetics is not focused on “fixing” anything, because you are NOT broken! Rather I want to help give you and your skin (aka your largest organ) the tools and products to help heal, strengthen, and restore your skin! I always want my treatment room to be a safe space for everyone, shame free, focused on empowerment, and based in educating clients to understand their skin rather than shame them into needing to be “fixed” and buy another treatment”.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
My treatment room really is my happy place. I also get so much gratification from helping people so when I am performing a treatment, the room is dark, candles are lit, calming music playing, etc I am just as much at peace as the client on my table! I love getting lost in my treatments and leave each services a little more relaxed.
