Inspiring Conversations with Aaron Pertner of New Day Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Pertner.

Hi Aaron, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I worked as a physical therapist (PT) for several years working with adults in the out-patient setting and as a pediatric therapist while working on friends on the side. Many friends suggested I start my own company and charge for my services, instead of working on people in my kitchen for free. I started New Day Physical Therapy as a cash-based clinic as a result. It has been a “side hustle” while working part time in the school system and with adults in nursing homes. I would like to turn New Day into a full time job so I can help as many people as possible get back to what they love to do pain-free.

I used my home office as my base of operations and also do home visits for patients. I recently started renting space from Defiance Strength and Conditioning gym.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road to where I am today. The struggles include balancing my part time career in the schools and in a nursing home with my part time stay at home dad role for my young children as well as finding time to get New Day off the ground. The biggest challenge is finding the time and the patients to work with. Word of mouth referrals only gets you so far and trying to get into a gym that wasn’t already working with another case-based PT company was difficult.

As you know, we’re big fans of New Day Physical Therapy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
New Day is a cash-based PT clinic, which means that I don’t take insurance. This allows me to treat the patient without insurance dictating how my services are applied or which techniques are allowed.

I am a hands-on manual therapist. I utilize soft tissue mobilization, dry needling, joint mobilization, and therapeutic exercises to get patients better. I specialize in shoulder and low back pain issues.

What sets me apart from other physical therapists is that I am able to take the time to understand the reason why a patient wants to eliminate their problem. It is never as straight forward as wanting to be pain free. There is always a reason that goes deeper, that gets them to buy into the physical therapy plan of care. When you have that buy in, the patient invests their time and effort in the process and takes more ownership of healing themselves with my help. With the cash-based model I see see patients once a week instead of 2-3 times a week like in a traditional clinic, which means I get people results with fewer visits, saving them money in the long run.

I am most proud of the relationships I have made as PT. Knowing that I helped get someone that I now consider a friend, better is immensely fulfilling.

I want them to know that physical therapy is a team effort. You have the coach and the athlete. When both are on the same page concerning the plan of care they both win.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
When you have people believe in and support you, you can achieve remarkable things.
