Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Slocum.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Thank you so much for having me and giving me the opportunity to share my story. I guess it all started when I was younger. Growing up as a Korean American, I didn’t have many Asian role models around me, and that made it difficult to find where I fit in. It was something I definitely struggled with. My parents divorced when I was young, and my mom lived in California. She could only show me so much when we were together during our summers, and FaceTime wasn’t really an option back then. So I didn’t have that strong female figure in my daily life to show me things like how to do my hair or makeup that was right for my look.
I turned to YouTube and discovered a Korean American beauty influencer. She was so beautiful and confident, and watching her talk about makeup and products truly captivated me. From that moment on, I was drawn into the world of beauty and especially inspired by Asian American content creators. That really sparked my love for makeup and K-beauty, and all things skincare.
Even though I was working in corporate jobs, I never truly felt fulfilled. One day I took a step back and asked myself, “What do I actually want for my future?” And everything kept pointing me back to the beauty industry. So I decided to go for it. I enrolled in esthetics school and immersed myself in everything—facials, skincare, makeup, products, you name it. I dove in fully and haven’t looked back since.
After esthetics school, I was fortunate to be hired at a medical spa where I worked with a talented plastic surgeon. I learned so much about facial anatomy, skin layers, and advanced techniques, and I tried to absorb every bit of knowledge I could.
Eventually, I moved further south, which made my commute over 50 minutes each way. It became exhausting, and I found myself at a crossroads: do I stay with this amazing practice, or do I branch out on my own? Around the same time, I was discovering a deeper interest in facial massage and non-surgical facelift techniques. That passion began to grow, and with a lot of encouragement from people around me, especially my dad who has been my biggest cheerleader, I decided to take a leap.
The stars aligned, and I found a beautiful space in Hudson, Ohio, and that’s where I’ve been able to build something truly my own.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. If you had told me years ago that I’d be a business owner, I would’ve thought you were crazy, it was never something I had on my bingo card haha. I had no background in business, so stepping into this world was honestly pretty scary.
I had to do a lot of self-teaching, researching, and leaning on mentors and friends who had their own solo spas/salons. Watching how they ran their businesses really helped me shape mine. What’s made the biggest difference, though, is the community I’m surrounded by. I’m lucky to be in an area full of strong, independent women running their own businesses. Their energy, support, and advice, both in person and through social media, have been such a source of inspiration and encouragement. It’s made this journey feel a lot less lonely and a lot more empowering.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an aesthetician specializing in customized skincare treatments, including facials, dermaplaning, chemical peels, and beauty enhancements like lash lifts and brow services. I focus on correcting concerns like texture, discoloration, and fine lines while helping clients feel confident in their skin.
What really sets me apart is my unique blend of experience. I’ve trained in a medical spa setting, which gave me a deep understanding of advanced, clinical treatments, but I also incorporate holistic techniques that offer real results without being invasive. I truly believe in the power of touch, clients not only see a difference in their skin, but they feel more relaxed and connected after every session.
I’m especially known for facial sculpting using buccal massage, a technique that works from inside the mouth to lift and tone facial muscles. It improves circulation, relieves tension, and naturally contours the face. It’s a non-surgical approach to lifting and tightening that gives amazing, visible results. I’m really proud to offer something so effective and unique, it’s not just skincare, it’s a full experience.
How do you think about happiness?
Work-wise, what makes me happiest is truly loving what I do. I don’t dread going to work, in fact, I wake up excited. It’s true what they say: when you love your work, it doesn’t feel like work.
Helping someone feel more confident in their skin, whether it’s clearing up breakouts, magically erasing their wrinkles , or simply giving them a moment of peace, fills me with so much joy. I’ve had clients tear up after a facial because of the emotional release, and knowing I played a part in that healing moment is incredibly meaningful to me.
On a personal level, nothing beats coming home to my two dogs and my fiancé. Just winding down, being with them, and enjoying those little everyday moments, that’s what truly brings me happiness.
