Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Matola.
Hi Julie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Before The Green Cottage Makery, I was living in a hustle-bustle world. I spent hours commuting to work and had limited time with my family. I wasn’t able to enjoy nature because I was constantly on the move, over consuming and overwhelmed. When I moved to the 130-year-old cottage, I felt this pull to slow down and connect with nature and what really mattered.
I became a label reader. I started paying attention to the products I was using every day, and what I found was shocking. The ingredients were full of chemicals and things I couldn’t even pronounce. The claims about “clean” and “natural” products were misleading. It pushed me to make a change. I started by simplifying my cleaning routine, using vinegar, baking soda, and peroxide—simple, effective, and natural ingredients.
I realized that many of the products I’d been using weren’t just unnecessary—they were making people sick. I wanted to offer something different. I’ve never been a heavy consumer, and I wanted to provide people with simple, multipurpose products that are truly clean. Each ingredient in my products is carefully chosen, and I make sure to explain what’s in them and why. I spent time researching to ensure everything I make is safe for my family, and now I’m proud to share that with others.
I have a background in product design, so I was able to apply that knowledge to create a sustainable brand. Everything—from the products to the packaging—is designed to be as eco-friendly and minimal as possible. Along the way, I’ve learned so much from the amazing community of business owners I’ve met through markets. They’ve been a huge support in helping me refine my business and stay true to my values.
The Green Cottage Makery is more than just a business to me—it’s a reflection of everything I value: simplicity, sustainability, and living with nature. It’s about making products that nurture and protect, and providing customers with clean, healthy alternatives that are good for both people and the planet.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—but that’s part of the journey. In small business, you have to wear all the hats or find the right people to help. I’ve had to learn everything from production to marketing to bookkeeping, and that can be overwhelming. One of the biggest challenges has been managing cash flow, especially since most of my income comes during the fall and holiday market season. It requires planning and trust in the slower months.
Another struggle has been connecting with customers in a way that feels authentic. I’m not a natural salesperson—I just care deeply about what I do. I want people to understand why most products on the shelves, especially those with synthetic fragrances, are contributing to serious health issues. But that message is hard to communicate quickly or without overwhelming someone. Educating customers without sounding alarmist, while still sharing why clean, simple products matter so much, has been one of my biggest learning curves.
Getting my products into the hands of people who value clean living is incredibly rewarding—but getting in front of them is often the hardest part.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Green Cottage Makery is a small-batch, handmade brand focused on clean, multipurpose home and body goods. Every product is created with intention—free from toxins, synthetic fragrances, or unnecessary additives. I handcraft everything myself, using simple, recognizable ingredients that are safe for people and the planet.
What I’m known for are truly clean formulations. I don’t hide ingredients or greenwash. I research every component and share openly about what goes into each product and why. I’m not trying to keep up with trends or overwhelm people with options—I’m here to offer thoughtfully made essentials that work and support a healthier lifestyle.
My bestsellers include our whipped calendula body butter, castile-based soaps, and essential oil room sprays—each one rooted in the idea that nature protects, heals, and nurtures us. Customers trust The Green Cottage Makery because of our transparency, sustainability, and simplicity. I’m most proud that the brand has built a loyal following simply by being honest, effective, and earth-minded.
What sets me apart is that this isn’t just a business—it’s a lifestyle. I live what I make. My background in product design and my personal journey toward clean living come together to create something truly intentional. Every formula, label, and package reflects that.
If there’s one thing I’d want people to know, it’s this: we shouldn’t have to trade health for convenience. You can trust that everything from The Green Cottage Makery is made with care, for your well-being and for the world we share.
