Today we’d like to introduce you to Quinn Mcilhargey.
Hi quinn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got started years ago, dabbling with scrap leather from my uncle’s furniture company in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the early post-college years around 2012. I got my degree in Business Management and Studio Art and found leather as an incredible material to work with as well as tell a story. It became my favorite hobby and extracurricular activity, forming mini studios in each house or apartment in lived in. I spent 9 years working for Anthropologie in their stores, moving from GR to Ann Arbor and finally settling in Cincinnati, which is where my business started to take shape. I decided to start selling in 2016 at local outdoor markets like The City Flea, and secured a couple wholesale partnerships with Magnolia and locally with Hosanna Revival that helped build a nice foundation for my business. I continued to pursue this business on the side, taking opportunities where I could and eventually quit my job at the end of 2020 to pursue Baqette full-time. It took a few years after that to focus and settle into my new reality. My business really started to take shape in early 2023 when I moved into a studio space outside of my house, then moving into a bigger studio space within the building about 9 months later… days before my first baby was born.
I operate this business with myself and one other sewist- wearing ALL the hats of a small business owner, including making the product.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been relatively smooth road, but a slow burn and a slow build. This business has been building for years- perfecting the craft, improving designs, creating consistency and building a strong rapport with every customer we sell to. There hasn’t been any viral success, but I feel confident that the way we’ve been building is sustainable while still continually seeing growth.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are known for our handmade leather goods! We got started by using scrap leather from a furniture company and continue to use upcycled leather where we can. We focus on small batch production and are inspired heavily by color.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking doesn’t have to be at a formal meet & greet event. It can be befriending your local bartenders, fellow makers and developing relationship there. I think networking, especially in your city is so beneficial to your brand. Those are the people that will support and encourage your growth! The small business network of entrepreneurs is also incredibly helpful and insightful. I have yet to find a brand that functions like us in both operations and product offering, but a lot of the basics of business remain true for all small businesses. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and bring awareness to your brand.
