Today we’d like to introduce you to Savon Bass.
Hi Savon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From the moment I could carry a tune, I found joy in sharing it. Whether I was singing in the living room for my family or harmonizing with friends, music was always my first language. That passion truly took root when I joined the Karamu Theater in Cleveland, Ohio—a place that awakened the performer in me and gave me my first taste of the stage.
After high school, life took a remarkable turn when I began singing background vocals for the late, great Dennis Edwards of The Temptations. That experience opened doors into the professional world of entertainment and taught me what it meant to share music not just with heart, but with soul.
Though gospel is my foundation, my love for music refuses to be boxed into a single genre. I’ve always been drawn to the rich melodies and timeless rhythms of soul, Motown, jazz, and pop. You can often find me performing at local venues, jumping on open mics, or working with professional tracks—what I like to call my “unsuspecting practice sessions.” These spontaneous moments keep me sharp and connected to the music and the people who love it just as much as I do. From the songs of Mary Wells, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Supremes, and Sade, to the powerhouse vocals of Whitney Houston and Tina Turner—I bring their stories to life in my own voice.
My journey spans back to the early ’80s, and it’s been a beautiful blend of music, theater, and a few surprise turns. I was honored to be crowned “Miss Black Cleveland” and later “Miss Black International,” milestones that pushed me further into the spotlight. Theater became another avenue for storytelling, leading me to roles in productions like Working, The Louis Armstrong Story, and Generations (directed by the legendary Ruby Dee).
I’ve also had the opportunity to be part of film and TV, with appearances in Sanford and Son, Proximity, Spider-Man III, and most recently Cherry. Over the years, I’ve fronted bands, hosted karaoke nights, and shared the stage with musical icons like Howard Hewett and Dennis Edwards. Performing at venues like The South Point Casino in Las Vegas has been a dream come true.
Today, I continue to follow my passion through my group “Reflectionz,” along with “The Tralalas,” a female vocal tribute act, and “The Gents,” a male tribute group celebrating the soul of the ’60s and ’70s. I also lead a jazz ensemble called “Indigo,” bringing smooth, soulful energy to every stage we touch.
Whether I’m singing lead or background, performing in a theater, a club, or on a casino stage, I bring everything I have. Music has given me a voice, a purpose, and a connection to people from all walks of life. I’m forever grateful for every opportunity I get to perform, and I thank God for blessing me with a gift that continues to open doors.
This is just the beginning.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Putting a band together sounds simple on paper — find some people who can play, vibe together, and chase the same dream. But in reality, it’s a battlefield of clashing egos, late-night doubts, and silent exits. Everyone brings their own baggage, their own demons. Some show up late, some don’t show up at all. Some want the spotlight, others just want to control it.
Working with different personalities felt like walking through a minefield — one wrong word and everything could blow up. I had to learn patience when I didn’t feel heard, bite my tongue when I wanted to scream, and still find the energy to keep creating. I saw the band as a brotherhood, but not everyone shared that vision. Loyalty didn’t come easy. Neither did trust.
And while I was trying to build something real, I was getting rejected left and right — by artists who didn’t want to work with me, by people who didn’t believe in my sound, by “friends” who supported me only when it was convenient. The silence from them hit louder than any applause ever could.
I had talent, but talent didn’t feel like enough. Not when you’re shy. Not when you’re your own biggest critic. I used to second-guess every note, every lyric, every move I made on stage. That shyness held me back more than any hater ever did. It made me invisible in a room full of noise.
But I’m still here. Still creating. Still chasing something that most people can’t even see. I’ve been rejected, overlooked, underestimated — but I’ve also learned to bet on myself. To speak louder than my doubts. To make noise, even if no one’s listening yet.
This isn’t just about music. It’s about proving that I belong — not because someone else said so, but because I decided I do.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built and the trust my clients have in me. Being able to bring a team together and make their vision come to life is an incredibly rewarding feeling. I’m also proud of the way I’ve grown as a performer and as a leader in this industry. From the struggles to the successes, every challenge has made me who I am today, and I’m grateful for every part of the journey.
What sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is my relentless pursuit of excellence and my ability to connect with people. I don’t just show up and sing; I immerse myself in the event, the clients’ needs, and the energy of the crowd. I go the distance to ensure that every detail is covered, and that no matter what, the experience is flawless. My ability to adapt, be creative, and push past any obstacle sets me apart in a world where complacency often takes over. I’m constantly evolving, and I bring that evolution into every performance.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Many people who know me or see my work may not realize the deep struggles I’ve faced in my personal life. My childhood was filled with turmoil and pain — from growing up in an unstable environment to experiencing abuse and trauma. There were moments in my life where I felt completely lost, and it seemed like there was no way out.
Despite everything I’ve been through — from physical and emotional abuse to heartbreaking situations — I never gave up. Music and performance became my escape and, ultimately, my healing. Through it all, I found a way to keep going, to push forward. These experiences have shaped me in ways that I now draw strength from in everything I do. They’ve given me a sense of resilience and determination that I channel into my work and my passion for connecting with others through music.
What might seem like just another performance is actually a reflection of the fight within me — the fight to rise, to overcome, and to keep going no matter the odds. I want people to understand that behind the music and the stage presence is a person who has fought for every bit of happiness and success I’ve found. That’s the strength I bring to every performance, every client, and every collaboration.
