Today we’d like to introduce you to Rickey Pryor.
Hi Rickey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was a little boy my mother always had me in some sort of choir or music program, I hated doing it, my teachers would always say I had the talent to be great, but I didn’t fall in love with music until I was a teenager, acting was my first passion, I did multiple plays like “Goldie Locks and the Three Bears” and “Carmen”, even had an audition for Disney Channel, financial resources were low so I didn’t get much opportunity to showcase what I could do as a kid, both parents have disabilities so it made growing up a bit more difficult, not to mention kids weren’t too friendly to put it softly. I finally got the chance to grow my craft as a teenager when I joined the Firestone Theater program, my first play “Black Girl” was the start, then “The Color Purple” ignited what would evolve into my passion for music today. I began to strengthen my singing voice, I began to learn different instruments, by the time I was 18 I knew 10 different instruments (piano, lead guitar, drums, bass guitar, violin, cello, viola, double bass, organ, acoustic guitar) and I created a band with my friends called “KidControversy” thus the name “Kidd”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Never a smooth road on the path to success, unsupportive family, fake friends, dealing with people in the industry and understanding that this is a solo game, we can all work together but everyone is looking out for themselves first. Never been rich so regular life problems are always a thing on top of chasing your dreams.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I always say my first love is acting, currently looking/auditioning for on screen roles, I’ve been on stage almost my whole life. Last play I did was at Weathervane Theater, I played “Hud” in “Hair”
Musically I began orchestra training in 4th grade up until 8th grade, so my first instrument is actually the cello, then the violin, viola and double bass. I learned lead guitar, piano, drums, bass guitar, organ and acoustic guitar in high school, in my band “Kidcontroversy” I was the lead singer/pianist/guitarist. For the last 8 years I’ve mostly made hip hop music my first project “Kid N Play” (2018) my second “Us vs Them” (2019) and my latest project “Badd Kidd” (2024) Which can all be found on Apple Music, Spotify and any other streaming services
I also have a podcast on Youtube called “Kidd’s World Podcast”
I also have been doing stand up around the mid west and southern US regions for the past 2 years.
What sets me apart from most people is my ability to stand in almost any facet of entertainment and excel
