Meet Kenny “Coach Jo Jo” Smith of Akron Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenny “Coach Jo Jo” Smith.

Hi Kenny “Coach Jo Jo”, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I-AM a modern-day “edupreneur” whose journey is built on resilience, perseverance, and an unshakable commitment to purpose. A former athlete, I credit my years on the court for instilling in me the discipline, leadership, and mental toughness that now drive my success in every area of life.

By day, I lead educational transformation as a consultant, curriculum designer, and professional speaker, specializing in social-emotional learning, literacy, and leadership development. By night, my focus shifts to serving as a nonprofit leader and community activist, creating life-changing opportunities for underserved youth and families.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been without adversity. Navigating the pressures of entrepreneurship, the emotional challenges of community work, and the complexities of sustaining meaningful impact requires the same resilience and perseverance I learned as an athlete. I am the type that looks meets each challenge head-on , while maintaining a strong, faith-centered home life with my wife and children, including proudly supporting my daughters, two time published authors known nationally as the “Hall of Fame Authors.”

My story can be used as a powerful reminder that the lessons learned in sports — teamwork, grit, accountability, and focus — prepare individuals not just for games, but for life itself.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work starts in the communities of Akron, Ohio but spans globally. During the summer of 2024 I was able to teach in Nairobi. Kenya. In 2021, I visited the World Expo in Dubai to learn about education around the world. I am passionate about global experiences.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One major childhood memory that helped create my current legacy was when my mom made me sit out of basketball in 7th grade because my grades slipped. She made me attend the playoff and championship game and support my team, and they won without me. She reminded me that basketball was going to continue with or without me, and the choice was mine. This life lesson sparked the creation of Ladies First Akron.
