Conversations with Cris Fellows

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cris Fellows.

Hi Cris, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Over a decade ago, I attended an herbal “Serpentine ” class, where the offered herb was tasted, smelled, felt but not named. It was a pleasant day. That night I had chills and aches and felt like I had the flu. My left ear had been plaguing me with fluid, not infected (I was an ER nurse, multiple providers had looked at it) which in the morning, after 9 months messing around with it, all drained out. That herb was Red Clover, and I was hooked. Around that time, we bought the 3 abandoned city lots behind our house, I started planting and studying. Fellows Herb’N Garden is now an urban regenerative permaculture garden with a strong focus on herbs. Teaching, tours, live plants and herbal medicinals are offered. Currently FHG has 20 pointed tincture blends, 7 chakra balancing teas and 7 salves available. I am always available for questions. As one might expect, I do not offer medical advice, if that is needed, see your provider.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The garden soil was initially straight city fill clay and rocks. It has taken many loads of cardboard, woodchips and compost to get it to the place it is today. On the plus side of that, I do not require a gym membership! 😂 The garden has recently undergone a name change and a bit of heartbreaking personal restructuring. But I am prepared to continue bringing the land back to its happy place and to give God glory.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Fellows Herb’N Garden is a beacon of beauty in a hard city, and I take delight in that. I thoroughly enjoy creating tincture blends, salves and teas that have been grown and processed right here.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Dirty hands and toes in the sunshine, birds singing in the background and even watching the thieving groundhogs scamper about are a recipe for happiness. But it elevates to a whole new level with a cup of tea and a friend.
