Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Davis.
Hi Cathy , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Emily and I have known one another as friends and colleagues for many years. We’ve worked together over the years in different capacities and our careers have aligned very closely with one another. Like a lot of new mental health providers, right out of school we both spent time providing mental health services out in the community. We’ve both worked with children and families, and later we both worked in the hospital setting with adults experiencing a mental health crisis. Eventually, we both found our way into solo private practices and as usual, decided to join forces and open a group practice in Westerville in order to provide services to as many people as possible. We work so well together. Why stop now?
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! If there is one criticism I have of graduate programs for counselors and social workers it is that not one single business class was offered to either one of us during our training. That’s terrible! So, we’ve had to figure things out as we go. Fortunately, Columbus has a great community of mental health providers and because most of us have had to wing it in terms of starting a business, we were able to ask questions and get a lot of support from others who have done it before us. The challenges have been numerous but I think we’ve done a great job in learning along the way. The biggest hurdles have been navigating how to work with insurance companies, learning how to market ourselves effectively, and working to attract an amazing team of therapists.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sequoia Therapy Group. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a group therapy practice that wants to change the perception of what it means to go to therapy. Our goal is to not only make therapy approachable for everyone but to have it be hopefully such a positive experience that 0ur clients talk about its benefits to their friends, family, and other people they know. I think therapy has traditionally been thought of as something being very private and personal, which obviously it is. But, a lot of people still feel maybe a bit of shame or embarrassment about working with a therapist. We really want to change that. In order to do this, our focus is to make our clients feel comfortable and empowered. We are really proud of the team we have developed so far. Our values include warmth, authenticity, kindness and of course, clinical expertise. Our hope is that the perception of mental health care, specifically working with a therapist, is eventually viewed as just part of a wider self-care routine. Just as important and normal as going to the gym or eating a healthy diet.
We’re also very proud to be able to offer a wide range of services to nearly anyone who walks through our door. We have therapists that specialize in perinatal mental health, trauma and dissociation, to general mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There have been lots of people along the way who have helped us. Both Emily and I would like to specifically recognize another great friend and colleague, Amy Bock. Amy is a trailblazer of sorts and definitely showed us the ropes. She and her partner, Jackie Savel, own a thriving group practice – Central Ohio Wellness Collective. Because they have been so successful, Emily and I definitely wanted to learn as much as we could about how they got started and Amy has been really gracious in helping us figure this out as we go.
