Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Smith.
Hi Kay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Kailyn but I go by Kay and my insta page is @itz.kaybre. My page name came from my nickname and a part of my middle name. I started doing hair when I was younger and once I learned how to do my own, I wanted to learn how to do different styles and I would try them on my friends and family. I really just started taking it seriously 2-3 years ago. I love making people feel about their hair so much and it has become a passion that started from me just doing my own hair.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all, trying to figure out pricing that would benefit me plus benefit my clients was the hardest really because I am a college student and money goes fast for books, food, and etc. I have struggled with learning how to french braid for years but I can sometimes get it right but it is still a work in process. Learning how to save money was a hard struggle to because when you invest into hair gel, braiding hair, braiding racks, and more can get costly but I found a balance by taking 20% of what I make, I invest into my buisness and the other 80% goes towards everything else
As you know, we’re big fans of ITZ.KAYBRE . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Itz.kaybre came from my nickname and a part of my middle name. I am a braider/hairstylist. I specialize in braids and wigs. I make sure that my clients are always comfortable from them being able to pick quiet appointments or to us watching certain shows while they are getting their hair done. I am a very gentle braider and I have always taken pride in being gentle on people’s hair because I have had my hair pulled out my braiders before and I know the difficulty when it comes to growing out hair. I also use certain products to grow thinning hair. I offer all braiding styles from knotless to fulani, wig installs, retwists for loc lovers, frontals, sew ins, ponytails, and more.
